I regularly get over 440 miles from my tank from my VRS and that is only to the warning light so probably have at least 30miles left in the tank. I have managed to get 550ish miles from a tank on a long run. But the again it is the diesel so not too much of a surprise

55litres standard but with venting I get 58l usually in or there abouts. 754miles works out at 57mpg.

Since the day I bought my Octavia 4x4 estate I've recorded the miles at each fill up. I have never achieved less than 48mpg and my best was 58.9mpg on a round trip to Cornwall (on quite night roads). Most of my driving is on uncluttered roads and my trips to and from work are off peak as I work shifts. I don't travel through any town centres either which is a great help to my mpg efforts.

I traded in an Audi A6 (V6 30v quad cam) that did about 30mpg at best with the average probably in the very low 20's. It was costing me an arm and a leg, so after much research I went for the Octavia and I'm well chuffed!

Driving very sedately and sensibly for the last 3 weeks or so I achieved 410.5 miles. It cost nearly £70 to refill the tank too :eek: Typically I would be looking at 280 - 300 miles out of a tank depending on journey length etc.

I get almost 600 miles from a £70 fill :rofl:

I tried this yesterday in my 1.6 FSI. Drove from Peterborough to Skegness to pick the children up and drove at or around 60mph.

On Leaving Peterborough, the miles left for a full tank was 480 and when I got to Skegness, it was 525.

When I got home it was 475.

So yes, if you can have a light foot, it shows you the savings that can be made. And it cost me 65.00 to fill up yesterday and this time last year, it was over a tenner less.

yes it can be done, plan ahead, get into high gear asap and keep the revs around 2k (on petrol). if you can see you got to brake soon, let off the accelerator and roll up towards it. Try doing something like the IAM (institute of advance motorist) or SAFED (safe and fuel efficient driving) course, ive put some info on this site about SAFED.

I regularly do a 70km round trip at work each day and have been working out how much money i save the company by driving in a SAFED way to how i use to drive and it works out over the week (350km) i save the company around £35 just on fuel.

and empty the car of the stuff in the boot, glove box, door and seat pockets, don't open the roof or windows, give the paint work a good polish, switch off aircon and radio.....

you could also slip stream a lorry too, but i beleive that is illegal and dangerous.

I had air con on all the way there and back last night, otherwise I would have roasted. Never found turning off the air con makes much of a difference, if any.

By the way, I got 50.7 mpg for the overall trip, which is the first time i've got over 50mpg.

In theory you should turn off as many electrical items as you can, the less load being taken from the battery the better, as the alternator therefore has less work to do to replace it. The less the load on alternator the less the power from the engine goes into the alternator. QED.

Or as we all know - Theoretical [insert_your_chosen_word_here] is practically useless

When I picked up my nearly new Passat 2l TDI Sport from Newport I zero'd all the trips and on board computer. It came with a full tank 70 litres and when I got home the car was still showing just over half a tank and averaged 52mpg.

I live just outside Edinburgh so 400 miles from about 35 litres and that's with cruise control on almost all the way.

The on board computer must be pretty much spot on but looking at if I brim it I'll get in excess of 850 miles.

Aaaahhh the joys of the pre Pumpe Duse engines.

I used to have a 90bhp mk1 Octy that ran purely on the fumes of passing traffic.

Month after month of 60+mpg (720 mile tank range) with odd trips done in economy mode to see what was possible = 76mpg (900 mile range)

However, my 2.0 140 mk2 averaged about 52mpg on the 1st leg of it's current Euro trip.

Filled up in Doncaster & then again at the Belgian / German border 400miles / 35 litres = 52mpg (630 range). Aircon on in blazing English sun, 10 miles of start stop through the Luton area M1 roadworks, then later wipers & aircon on in massive Belgian thunderstorms!

Think this next fill up will be worse as I'm in a hilly part of Germany with some unlimited bits of autobahn ..... well it'd be rude not to experiment wouldn't it.
