Quiet, comfortable tyres?

Featured Replies

All I know is that the quietest tyres I had on my Fabia were my late lamented P Zero Neros. After a recent trashing on a training day, I've had to replace them with Falken 912s (wish I could have stretched to some new Neros, but they weren't safe to use anymore), and they're OK-ish I suppose.

The Falkens are a bit noisier than the Michelin Primacies the car came with, but definitely quieter than the Toyo Proxeses I had on for a few years. Making comparisons with any tyre that the car leaves the factory on can be a bit misleading, though, as OEM tyres have different compounds to retail ones (as do the tyres on press demonstrators, as I learned recently...)

I've at last received the new wheels and tyres. I'm very impressed with the Falkens; they are much quieter than the Bridgestones. The new 16" wheels combined with the Falkens have improved the ride comfort enormously. The only downside is that the new wheels have an offset of only 35 so the fronts project slightly outside the wheel arch.

Yokohama DBS 550, it's a great tyre and really quiet. I had Event tyres come and fit 4 on mine and I'll have them again.

You should be able to pick up the Falken 451 tire for about £60 each.

I used to drive Falken FK-451 - they were fine new, but as they wore in they got noisy as h***.

Ended up changing them to Contis before they were half gone.

I know this thread has been running for a while but the link seems to suggest Pirelli P Zero Rosso Assymetricos (of which I am on my second set) are no quieter then than the potenza's that were factory fit on my 1.9 Octy II. Sorry but my experience suggests this is tosh. I cant argue with the Dutch authorities from an expert point of view but my Pirellis are superb, extremely quiet and stick like glue in all conditions. Never tried the Falkens though event though they are a lot cheaper. I guess you stick with what you are happy with.

Hope this helps someone.

Sometimes I think it's down to the car, or the size. A lot of folks complain about the Bridgestone ER300, but I had them on my last car and they were whisper quiet.

I'd suggest it's more down to the UK's current liking of sh*te road surfaces.

got falkins 452's on the front and bridgestone on the back, not notice anymore noise from the tyres but certainly not quieter (maybe cos bridgestone are still on the back). grip seems to be good from them.

Sorry but falkens 452's are not a quiet tyre, well not on my car, if you want a good all round tyre which is quiet i'd be looking at michelin pilot sports exaltos2 or similar.

Hmm odd that as the 452 are quieter than the PE2 I used to run.

Just had two Falken 452s put on the front of my Octy replacing the noisy Bridgestones. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but already the ride seems smoother and quieter. Now just need the rear tyres to wear sufficiently to warrant replacement!

Well, as mentioned in other threads, I had all 4 done a few weeks ago with 452's.

Must be better because I don't think about tyre noise any more! Handling seems nice too - a bit "lighter".

Hey Guys (and Gals) don't forget that ANY new tyre will be quieter and ride softer than the worn one being replaced, due to the full depth of rubber in the tread!

My Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s are generally quiet, but I have noticed an increase in road noise in recent weeks, that I attribute to the tread depth being down to around 3mm (they will be replaced soon).

My originals seemed noisy from new though - not terrible, but noticeably worse than the Mk1 I was replacing (no, I can't recall what that was on but they were also the originals.)

I can't swear that the Mk2's Bridgestones got worse with wear but they were certainly "noticeable" throughout their life, and I always kept them spot on the 2.2. BAR.

As soon as the 452's went on I thought, "Ah, that's better!" But of course other brands could be better still - can't try 'em all!

my bridgestones got more noisy, couldnt wait to replace the front pair, just now wished i swapped the backs to front to get them worn through quicker.

Just changed (on a vRS) from dunlop sp sport max (OE fit since new) - which I have had no issues with the handling of, contrary to many folks on here - to vredestien ultrac sessanta. Gotta say the ride is sooo much quieter now. Although the camber settings have been adjusted to the 'revised' ones now so that may have something to do with it too.

Cant comment on handling yet as the tyres are not really 'scrubbed in' yet to push it out abit on some familiar roads, but the EVO, whatcar, autoexpress and powercars magazines tests all gave the ultracs brilliant reviews.

£114 each balanced, new valves and fitted - and thats for 18"s!

IMHO you get what you pay for, I have just replaced the fronts (Michellin Primacy) on my Diesel VRS and didn't think that 31K was too bad for a pair of fronts?

Replaced with a similar tyre (the original fitment not made any more) but hoping for another 30K at least!

The Vredestein are a very, very good tyre. I've had all the makes, and the Vreds are some of the best allrounders.

I have the Ultrac Sessantas in 225/45 17 on my 'winter wheels' (to be refitted 1st October).

They are excellent all round apart from two points; 1. they are NOT quiet (as born out on the EVO test) and 2. on a £ per mile basis they cost the same as Michelin Exaltos (two thirds the price but only two thirds the mileage).

More on Falken's... After buying my 26,000 mile Octavia L&K with 17 alloys and low profile Dunlops (front) and Bridgestones (rear) I noticed a dreadful whining/droning around 40-50 mph, especially on smooth tarmac. The dealer replaced both rear wheel bearings under guarantee, but with no improvement. Then before a long continental holiday I decided to try new tyres and had 4 Falken's fitted, balanced and filled with Nitrogen. In doing so, I spotted some uneven wear on the old tyres. Anyway, the transformation is amazing - no whining, and its now a pleasure to have the radio on, whereas before it seemed to be in competition with the general rumble of road noise. I'd recommend the Falkens strongly, and from Micheldever tyres (in Hants) they were only about £75 each.

Ken

Thanks for the feedback Ken.

I'm looking for some quiet tyres also, which Falken's are they, 452's?

Cheers,

RDX

How much!!!

Yike I've just had them fitted from protyre (a subsiduary of Mucheldever IIRC) for £58 a corner.

Just gone for the 452s again on my vrs , had them on my cupra r and loved em .

put a set of the new ze 912 on my saab and was not impressed at all tbh. the dry grip was ok but it was not good at all in the wet.

Would not use the supposedly better replacement again and would have changed them if i had kept the saab.

... but isn't the ZE912 only a 'premium' tyre, whereas the FK452 is the 'sport/performance' tyre? hence less grip!
