I recently took my ten-year-old Felicia in for an MoT to my local garage and apparently it failed on emissions - the lamda reading was out-of-spec as well as the CO2 reading. The MoT tester told me to take the car back to the Main Agent (15 miles away) who could fix it for me. OK I did this and the Main Agent put the car on the Krypton and apparently all readings were spot-on, no problems there and gave me a print-out from the Krypton.

Well I took the car back to the MoT Garage who then proceeded to do another emissions check in spite of seeing the print-out from the day before. Guess what - the car failed the emissions test again. The MoT tester would not accept the reading from the Main Agent telling me that the test had to be done 'On the day'.

Being rather p***ed off I took the car back to the main agent explaining what had happened and requested an MoT from them.

The car passed but needed a couple of minor jobs such as bulb changes.

I get the impression that the original MoT tester was taking the wee-wee. Never before have I heard that the emissions test had to be done 'On the day'.

In any case there was nothing my local garage could have done unless they wanted to sell me a new exhaust (or engine!!!) or even a new Cat.

Incidentally I suspect that their Sun tester is not accurate, do these machines have to be tested regularly and if so how is it done?

Any information on this subject would be helpful.

Is this a local garage you normally use? Then speak to the manager explaining this then they have the machines calibrated.

If you suspect foul play then look at the vOSA website.

TBH why would a garage send you someplace else if they wanted to sell you something?

From what you say the sequence of events could be this:-

1) Left car for MOT, which it failed on emissions at unknown engine temp.

2) Drove car to dealer, who tested emissions on known hot engine, and it passed MoT standard.

3) Back to MOT place, who then failed car at unknown temp again.

4) Dealer did MOT, and passed car (presume engine was hot again).

Suggests one of 2 scenarios to me:-

A) MOT place was not testing car on hot engine

B) MOT place needs emissions probe calibrating. I don't see any way they can be mis-reading a voltmeter.

The car must pass the MOT at the time of testing, now it is all computerised, the theory is it must pass in the vose alloted time for that test, The gas analiser print out should have a time and date stamp on it, and this should tally up with the time of the test. When it comes to vosa audits, if things dont tally up a station can loose its licence

hi, i work at a garage in birmingham and before before we do an MOT in the morning the system must be calibrated and before every test the machine is calibrated. we use a SUN DGA2500.to test the emmisions on a car the computer has 3 options and the tester must press either:

Temprature shows a warm engine

Engine fan cut in

Coolant pipes warm

Chunk
