roomster 1.9 tdi with a six speed box?

Featured Replies

Hi this is my first post so please be gentle. I would like to know if it possible to fit a six speed gearbox? Has this been done? if not, why? any info would be much appreciated

I haven't looked under the bonnet of the roomster but i can't see why it would not fit. I think with a re-map and coupled to a six speed box it would be a cracking little car (and my large four footed friend would love it). If skoda won't make a VRS roomster I will.

Many thanks in advance.

Cant see any reason why it wouldn't. You need gearbox, flywheel, clutch, starter motor, driveshafts, mountings, clutch pipe and bolts.

Yeah take the full drive-train out of a Diesel Cupra!!!

Reckon it will add about 30kgs to the front end :thumbdwn: and would give you little advantage over the standard box

A Roomy with a RARB will handle better than a standard Fabia VRS so it doesn't need a lot of work. We know the PD 105 maps well so this might be easier than you think. These mods have been done ;) and there are one or two Vroomsters knocking around...

Hi, guys thanks for the info thats great. Are all the 1.9 transversly mounted six speed diesel boxs the same ie golf, bora, leon, fabia vrs 115, 130,150 and 160 etc or do the different vehicles have diffrent ratios and/or final drives?

once again many thanks

Why do this change?

Got to be an expensive job and you'd no doubt not get your money back on resale.

Stick with the OE 5 speed box, IMHO, and invest on tuning other parts

Seems like a whole lot of effort and expense for not much benefit

I'm far from technical, but I'd say some mods of the injectors, turbo, some remapping etc. will give you far more speed than a six-gear. As said, the 1.9TDI-engines are easily chiptuned. Even without added parts.

I'm a (lite) member of the TDIClub Nederland. Over there, the same engine in some cars will put out 200 HP or even more. Mine is quite modest compared to that with 136 HP, but this is still sufficient to have other drivers look VERY surprised:D

I'd go with a remap too. The 5-speed ratios are nicely spaced and lengthed; the reason for the 6-speed was to allow a longer top with the same bottom, spacing and length (and maybe for marketting too).

is there someone who change earbox to 6 speed in roomster or fabia and can confirm if it was worthy...? Any suggestions?

I'd be surprised if anyone had... The only time most people would think of such a swap is if the current box was knackered otherwise there is no point... How about just changing the final drive in 5th if its thought a higher gear is needed, thats what they seem to have done with the Greenline and in a 1.6TDi Golf 6 I drove recently... In the Golf all the other gear ratios seemed to be the same as my Roomie but 5th was geared a lot higher - 70mph was 2100rpm as opposed to 2500rpm in the Roomster.

Having driven mine around for a week now, I find the 5 speeder just fine. Yes, the change is a bit rubbery, but the ratios themselves are okay with this engine, especially if remapped. ;)

I wouldn't want the added weight just for a longer top gear personally, but everyone is different I guess.

Agree on the RARB, difference is very noticeable and an excellent addition.

Hi, is there any gearbox specialist who can say about 5th gear change to push it higher? As someone said 70 mph with 2100 rpm would be just perfect and then remap engine can make superb alternative and also cheaper and easier.

The OP doesn't say WHY he wants to do this mod - my Touran was a 6 speed and had the same final drive ratio as our Golf Plus - the only difference being an extra 'short' gear between 3rd and 4th to assist with towing.
