thanks to Phil and whining noise at speed

Featured Replies

First of all, a big thank you to Phil (piv34uk) for his deal on a new set of front tyres.

And those avon zz3 do appear softer than the michelin primacys so looking forward to some dry road action. Already feel more planted on road and better turn in response :)

However, I do appear to have a very audible whine at an indicated 85. Quite strange - has only appeared over the last few weeks. Thought it could be due to the spare that was fitted and the one time I reached that speed on my bit of private road, but now with proper tyres, properly balanced and filled with nitrogen, it's still doing it.

Any ideas as to what it could be? It's not there at 82, comes in then at 87+ it goes away.

And lastly, I owe you a pint Phil for you help, pricing (or should I thank Rob?) and also an apology for turning up late. T'was obvious everyone wanted to go home early so apologies for keeping you busy :o

But thanks again :D

Does it do it in any particular gear?... just on acceleration?

maybe its just the car telling you to drive it properly ;):D

When I fitted my TT wheels there was a very noticeadle drone (almost sounded like a knackered wheel bearing but didnt change with steering load) at bang on 90 mph. The TT wheels had two different types of tyres on, Pirelli's on one pair and Uniroyals on the other two.

The drone was comming from the o/s/f. After swapping the wheels front to rear the droning has just about gone (think i cant just hear it from the back, but its far less noticeable). As one the Pirelli's has just about had it I think ill get two new Uniroyals put them one and use the Pirelli thats stil good on a spare TT wheel (cant fit my gen spare ont he front over the four pots :( )

Strangely enough i had a droning noise with TT wheels too...

:sofahide:

It went away after i tightened them up at Brunters

The only whining noise I hear at speed tends to be the missus. :D

Cured it by only having fun when she's not there.

Seriously though, only had a whining noise on conti sport contact 2's. Nothing with p-zero's until they wore quite a bit, and the F1 GSD3's I'm running on at the moment are a dream. Nothing, not a sausage, and they grip big time.

Out of curiosity, why have you filled your tyres with nitrogen? The only place I've seen any advantage of doing this is on aircraft, and that's only because nitrogen is not flammable should it pile in, catch fire on takeoff/landing or get shot.

Nitrogen stays at a stable pressure regardless of temp apparently

and also apparently removes any corrosion risk as it doesn't let moisture in. Also keeps pressure longer as it's less permeable through the tyre (according to the sales guys anyway).

I just filled with nitrogen 'cos it's what Phil had put in the deal :)

re the noise, I don't think it's a tyre thing. just changed them and it still does it. Can't quite define where from though. I hope it's not a wheel bearing - already been through one and replaced under warranty... It doesn't appear to be speed related though - ok, I only hear it during in a small speed bandwidth, but the pitch is constant, doesn't seem to raise when speeding up or lowering tone when slowing down.

The thing I've noticed with my nitrogen fill is that the tyres appear rock hard when driving, up to the point my wife thought I had upgraded the suspension ;)

Now there is an idea... :D

In which case go back to air, Q, after surreptitiously upgrading the suspension.

I'll have to try that nitrogen thing then, don't pay for it as I'm in the airforce. :thumbdwn: Nothing to lose.

Have you tried swapping the tyres back to front? Are the front tyres wider that the rears?

Xavier,

Does the noise disapear if you slightly apply the brakes or steer to either the left or right.

That's what was happening with mine.

 For the hundreth time if you want more detail on Nitrogen inflation check the site www.uniflate.com it does exactly what it says.:P

The o/s/f wheel bolts on Xaviers car had all been stripped:confused: we was wondering wether this was the side you had the bearing replaced? if so then they may have damaged the hub:eek: Try rocking the car side to side when the noise comes on to see if it gets louder or quieter under load

:D Just to mention this noise was there BEFORE we put tyres on it:rolleyes:

 Phil

P.S hope the meal was good Xav;

Phil, that's a very good point - yes it was the o/s/f bearing that was changed... Hmm. Will try the rocking thing to see if I notice anything. Not sure I can find a road wide enough to do it at the required speed though

I know I put the spare on the front right, but those bolts were damn tight to put back in, and they weren't in the best shape at that point - maybe something the dealers didn't do right when they swapped the bearing

I did put in a pointer in the first post removing any liability for you Phil :P

Hmm. May have a word with Jacksons tomorrow...

Oh, the meal was most excellent :yummy: SWMBO was even a little :faint: after the fruity Italian white wine :drunk:
