Featured Replies

Hi all,

Don't know if I'm posting ito the correct section so feel free to moveif required.

I installed Vag Com on my laptop last night but can't get the interface to Work (OBD II) I run vista on my lap top and followed the instructions but when it came to the wizard set up for the interface it never worked so I have Vag Com but the interface does not work.

Any ideas how to get this working?

Hope you can help.

Hi,

I am led to believe that you need version 7 or above to work with vista. If you have the genuine Ross Tech cable you should be using the new version which is 8. If you purchased the cable from ebay you have to download whichever version the cable manufacturers recomend. In my case it was the shareware version 409.1. I used it with my ebay source cable aqnd it worked fine. So much so that i upgraded to the registered version, for £50.00, to unlock more features.

Hi Mate,

Thanks for getting back, Ill give that a try tonight when I get in.

Cheers

Sorry mate,

Failed to mention one bit. Version 409.1 is listed as not working with Vista. It might work in Windows compatible mode. In the end i purchased a OEM version of XP and it worked perfectly with that.

Cheers mate, that will explain my problem then, lucky swmbo has a laptop that I can use with other software.

if its a genuine rosstech product then they can give you free support.

I don't think it is a genuine product but the website they tell you to download is from Ross Tech.

Ross - Tech make the software and the original leads. I presume you bought a lead from eBay then. Mine, which i also got from eBay works perfectly with XP. One draw back from using the shareware version is that it wont allow you to do any adaption. For example. Auto lock, auto unlock, horn beep etc. To enable these you have to register the shareware version which i did for $99. This then unlocks the software and there are a lot more features. The good thing is if you ever decide to buy a genuine cable and package from Ross - Tech they will deduct $99 from your order as the registeration stays with the owner.

My local independant garage quoted me £25 for every feature i wanted to be enabled so i was cheaper paying $99 and having my own diagnostic software to boot.

Ok managed to download the vista version and still nothing, same problem as before not picking up cable.

Any ideas??

Davy

The aftermarket cable you picked up on eBay will probably require a bunch of tweaks in the operating system to get it going. Running it under Vista will add to the complexity as the versions 311 and 409 predate Vista by at least 3 years.

Try reading this thread to see if there is anything that might help you:

If not, sorry, since I don't know your hardware and since you didn't buy anything from Ross-Tech yet, I am reluctant to help further. Use the search function on this forum many have had these problems with their eBay interfaces and the old versions of VAG-COM under Vista.

Thanks mate, I'm not the most computer minded person, but my brother helped me last night and told me to update to the latest edition of Vag COM think it's 8, so I will get him to have a wee look the night at this on what you have posted and if it makes sense to him,he might have some wee idea on how to run it from what has been suggested.

Cheers

Davy

I thought the latest version would only work with an official cable.

I thought the latest version would only work with an official cable.

Tried to tell my brother that one but he insisted it would work, if I cannot get it to work then will prob sell it on and see if someone else can make use of it.

Failing that I still have a xp powered laptop in the house either my brothers old one or SWMBO's.

I'm pretty sue there is something in the official VAG COM lead that unlocks the lateset downloads. I bought my HEX CAN lead from Rosstech and when I first plugged it into the car with the 8 download it authorised it all. Has worked faultlessly and has done me proud, cant praise the geniune stuff enough along with the excellent help from Rosstech themselves.

Same here. It just works.

I would try with win xp and 409.1. If its a usb cable you will probally need to install a usb to serial converter driver. Also in device manager make sure the port is matched up to the port vag-com software is using.

Don't use the usb port setting in vag-com because if its like mine you have to make vag-com think its a serial cable.

Davy, I would do the same as mentioned above. If you have a Computer with XP on it use that. That way if you decide you like it and use it enough you can then go and buy the genuine latest version from Ross-Tech themselves which works under vista. Ross-Tech also offer different cables which if you bought the correct one would allow you to work on any Audi, VW, Skoda or Seat cars.

Check out these other sites that supply the genuine cable and are based in the UK i believe.

considering its a one off fee you pay for free support and updates (unlike many other companies) and less than 100 dollars (50 quid) which is less than an hours labour or one trip to the local VAG dealer i cant see why many have to cut corners only to waste their money and then end up buying it from an offical company or straight from ross tech.

To buy the genuine package from Ross-Tech is considerable more then $99. Thats probably why Ross-Tech make the shareware version still available because they know that people will want to try it out to see what there getting before they go and upgarde to the real deal. When i start looking for a new car ( Audi ) i will defintely invest in the cable from Ross-Tech suitable for that car, but only because i know what i am buying.

I think more like something in the latest genuine version that KILLS the cheap copy leads - IMHO be careful

Don't be a dummy like I was, buy a genuine Ross Tech

ah yes dollars, sorry i mis read it as uk pounds which is roughly what i paid for my micro can once you convert dollars to pounds.

  • 1 month later...

For what it's worth and if it helps anyone one I've just been through the headache of getting an eBay OBDII cable going on my son's XP laptop. The vendor didn't send the drivers and has proved rather uncooperative in providing them.

Oddly his cable worked straight off on my laptop - which has drivers for my own eBay cable (not from the same seller) - yet my drivers failed to get it going on his machine !

After much searching and mucking around I finally found THIS site from where I downloaded the 2.04.06 drivers and BINGO, one working OBDII cable
