Just to confirm I'm now vagcom enabled, managed to get it up and running and tested it on the car and no faults detected.

Cheers

NOW you tell us......:D

Ah, but i only just spotted this thread ! :P

can i ask what this install does? is it just an engine managment software and fault finder? so you can view your engine managment while driving or for finding problems at the road side? i might be complelty off here and be talking about something that is totally different but i am an extremly stupid person so please forgive me lol:D

I needed to end the ActiveSync process tree (wcescomm.exe) and shut down AVG to get mine to work - I think: it's still a bit flaky...

Strange, mine works ok with ActiveSync (v4.2.0) and AVG 8.

Turns out 'tis just ActiveSync that conflicts, however I have a serial cable, so maybe that makes a difference. I also have a Dell, which, it appears, is a bit of a minefield. Still, works now (except for Central Convenience - too much interference?!?!)

Yeah you're in the right ball park there. Live data logging and fault code reader, very powerful tool in the right hands(not mine I may add:O).

so basically if you have one of these leads and the software you can check pretty much any technical data on your car. so say you broke down on the way home, you just switch on your laptop plug it in and up pops the problem (in theory) and you can also view all other details of the engine managment.

Would be quite interested in this. How much would it be all in for the software and cables (genuine). dont think i would want to plug in anything dodgy lol

also thanks for that reply fatty5000

about £250 I think for the genuine rosstech but you can pick up a fault code reader for say £40, will find out for you in one of the vw mags.

Davy

this comes from the supliers and costs $199 you will need to pay import duty and tax unfortunatly

Don't be a dummy like I was, buy a genuine Ross Tech

take it from me too

its like buying any other tools in your box

if you buy good tools they will last a lifetime

if you buy cheap you buy two or three times

(guess who bought a cheap vagcom lead then replaced it )

what is the real difference between the chea ebay ones and the ross tech? is it simply more features or is it reliabilty. one of my mates has a bora and they'v been sticking one of them cheap ebay 1's in and out all the time tweaking things and who noes what there doing to there car. i only realised the other day how powerful these devices are. i thought it was more of a managment system where you just viewed your engine status.

Also can you program it so that your doors automatically lock after **mph? i had this feature on my last car and i really miss it.

I think the cheap ones from ebay only carry out diagnostics, unless I'm doing something wrong as all I got was it running through the diagnostics and the car came back with a clean bill of health.

Yes you can lock the doors using vag com again not sure if you can do on cheap leads, also you can get a couple of beeps for when you unlock the car and a beep when the car is locked, I would say just leave it on locked as it does get a bit annoying when you leave early in the morning!

are the beeps available on the cheap ones or only on the rosstech one? i understand the ross tech one must be alot better but all i really want is for the doors to lock and possibly that beepy alarm thing

I think only on the ross tech version, I've not had much of a play with mine yet, but sure it is just Rosstech.

The cheap cable will work with the older version of vag com but only for evaluation purposes. iirc it will let you clear fault codes and thats about it. The full rosstech version will let you do everything that you can do with car, ege beeps, locks etc.

You could buy a chaep cable and a liecence too unlock the older software. The newer VAG cars use a newer protocol called canbus which is only supported by the newer cables, so if your car uses this the older cble is no good.

mines a 2005 fabia vrs but im not to sure if it uses the 16pin connection of the can bus. does anyone no what year the fabia was changed to the can bus?

Yours will be a 16 pin connection mate.

Not quite. The eBay cables allow you to operate VAG-COM in the shareware mode. The shareware functions are limited as you are getting the software capability for free. Full function of the software is available to all who purchase a license for the software from Ross-Tech. The license costs $99 and it comes with full support for the software - not the hardware purchased on eBay. Ross-Tech will assist with questions about procedures and so on for your car. This is available to registered license users via email.

For more information about the difference between the shareware and the full function package, view this page:

Cool thanks for letting me know.

  • 3 weeks later...

I seem to be sort of different, I've had a reg'd copy of VAG-COM for about 6 years, so I'm stuck at version 409.1-S what I really need to do is to see if my vendor still offers a trade-in on this cable against the latest including CAN-BUS package - so that I can still use it when I get some newer cars. At the same time, as I'm a bit lazy, I am toying with the idea of getting a simple self contained code reader/fault clearer - just to have in the car at all times as it saves waiting until you get home to find out what is wrong and avoids the need to grab the garage laptop, check its battery is okay and shuffle out laptop and cable in hand to read and clear random faults. The upgrade to the latest VAG-COM was last Christmas's present from wife - my fault that I have not bought it yet! The code reader might need to be part of this years's Christmas from someone!!

Well after all the hassle of installing Vag com and the drivers my laptop decided to give me a failure on the hard drive!! so going to have to start all over again when the laptop comes back!!
