Steering wheel wobble.......

Featured Replies

Hi....... I seem to be discovering more and more issues with my 04 vRS that i bought recently :(

The problem..... when driving on the motorway cruising at approx 65 - 70ish when i depress the accelerator hard to get past someone, the steering wheel shakes quite severly, you ca see the steering wheel physically shakeing. When i return to cruising speed the car is as smooth as can be. Could this be something to do with my 'suspected' broken front arb? or something else entirely?

I 1st noticed the problem the day i picked the car up from the garage, driving it home, but at the time hadn't realised the situation in which it occured - i just thought maybe the wheels might need balancing. It's only recently i realised that it doesn't do it all the time, only when the engine is accelerating when already at speed. It doesn't appear to do it when accelerating at lower speeds.

I hope someone can help, i'm starting to regret ever buying the car! i bought the car from a main dealer thinking i'd be saving myself a whole lot of grief, but it doesn't appear to be turning out like that......

Cheers

Steve

Checked your tyre pressures?

It's quite possibly your flywheel. It doesn't take too kindly to harsh acceleration in top gear. I'd be down in 5th or even 4th if I wanted to pass someone on the motorway, personally. If it only does it when you describe, then that small change to your driving may be enough - a bit of mechanical sympathy can work wonders!

OTOH, if you bought it Approved Used, then presumably you have some warranty left? If so, I suggest getting them to look at it whether it's 'terminal' or not...

Hi, the car was a non-approved used car with 3 months warranty. approx 2 months remaining. What exactly does the 'non-approved' term mean as opposed to 'approved'? what am i entitled to on a non approved used cars warranty?

I've just been searching the board, and came across this thread 'SHAKING STEERING WHEEL!?!!?' which on reading would suggest it may be the console bushes that are worn rather than the flywheel? The symptoms definately seem to be similar..... Sound likely? Could this be related to the possible problem i also have with the knocking sound that could be my front arb? i know in my thread about the knocking sound, someone suggested getting the console bushes changed at the same time as the arb so i'm guessing it could all be a related issue, but i don't know jack........ Is this all likely to be covered by my non-approved used car warranty??

Steve

Sorry, hadn't seen your other thread. Worn bushes is a known issue with the vRS, and is tied in with wear on the old-style ARB. You'll have to look at your warranty documentation to see if they're covered or not (if it just says "suspension", you're probably OK). A good way of checking if they're knackered is to listen for creaking over sppedbumps, but knowing that console bush problems are suspected, I'd get that looked at first and see if it cures your wobble!

i had exactly the same thing hapen in my 54 plate vrs this morning

i pick up a set of console bushes this afternoon and intend to fit them tonight (weather permiting )

i was estimating about 4 hours to complete

i take it thats a bit optimistic ?

Four hours is a bit longer than I was thinking you meant by "tonight", although IIRC I was charged 3.5 hours for the work at Awesome - I guess it would depend on how good a spanner thrower you are. And I think the "don't start if you're worried you won't finish" warning in the second link is probably good advice. :o

Do you have the Powerflex front bushes to? I only ask as they can fail as well and it would be a pity to have all the bits off once just to have to do it again...??? :(

If you do think you're OK to manage it and have all the bits, though, then go for it!

thanks for the info

i have the powerflex bushes in the house waiting to go on

and im a bit handy with a spanner ;) fitting the 312mm brake kit only took 75 mins:P

I'm assuming you've checked the obvious wheel balancing - none of the weights have fallen off?

I had pronounced vibration on my Lupo in a very narrow speed band (between about 65 and 75) and it turned just to be as simple as the balancing...

i'd go for DMF vibration , this can happen when booting it to overtake , as has been said drop down a gear or 2 , then boot it , if it doesn't happen then, you'll know what it is and know what to do to stop it happening again

I'm betting on it being the DMF as well, a lot of people seem to suffer from it - I don't know if it's normal or not??

right 4 hours and 5 minuets later i'v finnished

one of the bushes was tor top and bottom the other was in two parts

i havent tried it yet as i'm totaly "bogging" and hypoglycemic so im off for a shower and something to eat

when the engine is laboured, i.e. full throttle at 1500-2000 rpm it is in the highest torque load for the engine , hence vibration at 65-70mph when under full torque load

it is normal for it to occur , but if the DMF is getting weak , it will be more violent , with metallic knocking noises

and it wont put a 10 mm wobble on the steering wheel :P

I had this problem myself with my old car.

Check the suspension over... turned out my suspension coil had gone.?

Wasnt noticeable to look at, but when you acclerated it shook the car to bits.

It also wears out your tyres REALLY quick.

If not have a look at the tracking of the car.

If not have a mechanic to check the car over, could have been in a crash and repaired on the cheap, so the chassis isnt even.! (happens more than you think)

If it is none of those... then im stuck sorry.

Michael

Its more than likely the DMF vibrating under load. Pretty common thing, mine does it too...

big thanks to lummox! took my car to him yesterday for cupra console bushes, dogbone mount, and 2 new tyres to all be fitted. was all done and dusted in the space of about an hour, and now the nasty clunk coming from the front end of my car has gone :)

(cant be correct can it? ^)

the "next " time i do this job i will probably be a bit quicker (if i ever do it again)

but 1 hour is realy going

but 1 hour is realy going

When you get Chuck Norris to fix your car, impossible is nothing! ;):D

i suppose when your chuck norris the bushes go in with a swift roundhouse :D

i suppose when your chuck norris the bushes go in with a swift roundhouse :D

I don't think he even needs to touch them, he just looks at them and they push themselves in for fear of being crushed by his fingers:D
