Well the 18 button computer now works great!!! Still need to find a temp sensor and a speaker for the "over speed limit" function, but the consumption, range etc all hunky dorey. Turned out to be just bulbs that were broken. :)

Not my picture, but shows you what the 18 button OBC looks like :)

Had the big bore throttle body and M50 intake manifold fitted to, as per THIS thread.

And lastly, I've bought me a Limited Slip Diff!!! Its local, and is the correct ratio for a 328i Sport. Collect it tomorrow, although I will be getting it reshimmed, bead blast and powdercoated, and new seals/oil etc before its fitted.

Off to collect the diff this evening :D

Done over 3000 miles now, and for those that care, here's a rundown of the costs so far.

August 2008

Purchase Price - £1995

Insurance - £1084.45

Tax - £101.75

Maintenance - £341.52

Accessories/Mods - £722.59

Petrol - £587.63

Total spent in August (and the first week of September) of £4832.94!

Gives a cost per mile (if I was to sell now for £1995) of 89 pence per mile!

Better slow down on the spending for a few months I think!!

The PDF shows the breakdown of costs so far, all courtesy of www.spritmonitor.de/en/ A very good site to use once you get the hang of it. :)

328i costs Sept.pdf

Amazing how quick it adds up.

I'm surprised the insurance is so dear, but then, it's probably a Grp 16 or something being the 328 i expect.

Where did you end up going for the diff ?

  • Author

Southend-on-sea, about 90 miles each way, so not too bad.

Yeah, think it is group 16. I was insured with Swiftcover on the Mondeo, but they wouldn't insure me on the 328. Its quite dear as thats the total of all the monthly payments, as a lump sum it would have been under a grand. :)

Well, did well on the rolling road, 215bhp, 270Nm and curves that are pretty much perfect!!

Also got the new bonnet today, followed by an attack on the Cat & Fiddle.

Took a few snaps :)

Some nice shots there Tom and the car's looking well

Nice pics - some familiar locations there

Indeed some very familiar locations there! Good pics. Am I reading that RR plot right though? 165whp and 215 fly power = nearly 50bhp transmission loss.

  • Author

Cheers guys!

Yep, lots of transmission loss. Not as much as an octavia vRS though :P

More money

Gave the car a good clay, polish and wax on Saturday, and when taking the wheels off to do them, the back tyres were very bald in the middle, so got some new tyres. Falken 452s, had them on my Octavia vRS and really rate them! £145.70 for the pair, fitted. Not too bad.

My uncle has just part-exchanged his tatty old 318 auto, so I pinched the pretty good condition mats from that for free :)

Also, popped into the main dealer for some bits:

Repairs/Niggles

Headlight switch bulb - 90p

Clip for the carpet in the boot - 18p

Bonnet latches - £19.79

Door handle seals x4 - £3.60

Bonnet strut clips x4 - £6.64

Replacement under bonnet sound deadening - £45.08

Replacement centre air vent (mine had sagging slats) - £39.42

Replacement floor mats securing clips x8 - £7.28

Bonnet hinge bolts x4 - £6.64

Rear windscreen seal - £17.37

Maintenance

Coolant - £18.90

Thermostat and seal - £25.11

Pollen filter - £20.86

Fuel filter & clips - £28.43

Mods

Illuminated M// leather gearknob retrofit kit - £66.45

Goodbye £477.61

Still, a big step forward in getting the car mint! :)

Also provisionally purchased a set of the mtech rubbing strips from a forum member too. :)

Pics as/when bits get put on the car.

Good grief Tom, you have just about replaced every single piece of the car. don’t forget to fit indicators to it too though.

My indicators work just fine thanks, as I'm sure yours do ;)

Car still needs a few bits sorting, like the parking dings and a saggy drivers seat bolster, but getting to near mint! :)

Please don’t sell it as soon as you have finished fettling it. It sounds like it will be a top car, although I am not sure about the illuminated M gear kn0b thingy, but that’s my personal taste.

Well my current gear knob is tatty as hell, and I have got the M// steering wheel and gearknob as standard, so its only really an upgrade in terms of the illumination. Its only available as an M// knob otherwise I'd have gone for a normal one, but the illumination is nice. :)

I do love the 328, can't see me swapping it in the forseeable future. :)

When I was younger I really fancied one of these. Just couldn’t afford one:(

Its very difficult to justify nearly £70 on a fancy gearknob regardless! :P

Tom, I've got the same bug as you now. I'm on the journey of sorting my new motor.

Get a damn journal up then buddy!

I do enjoy the tinkering though, albeit a bit frustrating to have such an empty bank balance and a car that not there yet :(

I can understand some of those parts , but "Replacement centre air vent (mine had sagging slats) - £39.42".........

Fourty quid on an air vent?

Are you mad?

If ever there was a part to get from a scrappy that's it.

What is the 'forseeable future' in the world of Tom? 2 months?

Sounds like it's coming on well Tom, can't wait to see some more shots

Yep, it was a *gulp* moment, but they all do it, and the colours on the decals had faded too. A lot of money, but its right in the line of sight. Besides, if I ever sold the car or god forbid crashed it, they go for £30 in immaculate condition second hand. :)

 More than a few months for sure. Will definitely be 12 months, unless something drastic happens between now and then.

More photos at the weekend if its nice and I get to fit all the bits.

Just to add, currently sitting at 85ppm assuming I could sell it for £2k. Ouch. Now THATS motivation to keep it a bit longer

Tom do you think you could do a fresh and concise journal where all your pictures were hosted somewhere? I enjoy reading and looking at the pictures of members endeavours, but clicking on links all the time can be a little bit of a pain (perhaps I am just a bit too lazy). Pretty please with knobs on

There is no point Amanda, just wait for the inevitable for sale thread that'll be along soon. :P
