service in 700 miles or 272 days

Featured Replies

Maxidot says service in 700 miles or 272 days, but ive only done 18400 miles, what about the other near 1k miles before i hit 20k? this has started to come on everytime i start the car up for the past couple of days.

how much is a 20k variable service anyway and what do they do on it?

If your on the variable servicing schedule the car measures oil quality and other things and from that determines when a service is needed. Which will be within 2 years or within 20k miles. Sounds like you've done better than me, my Vrs service comes up every ~14-15k miles.

My 1st (~15k miles) and 2nd (~29k miles) services cost about 160 quid. It was basically an oil change and a quick check over the car. I had the brake fluid changed on the 2nd service which was an extra 43.

cool ill leave it till 19.5k and book it in then. just wondered if they did the sparks and the usual things you expect on a service. also can i take it to a vw garage and get the service updates etc and service and still be covered by warrenty?

I'm not 100% sure on this so best you check this, but I think as long as the car is serviced at a VAT registered garage and genuine service parts are used you can get it serviced anywhere and maintain the warrenty. The only issue being getting hold of ecu updates etc and the fact your independent might not have all the info on fixes etc.

Having said all that I get mine serviced at my local Skoda dealer. In the past I had an issue with a Vauxhall that was just outside of warrenty. But because the local dealer had serviced it I got a goodwill gesture and they fixed it for nowt.

As far as servicing at VW, I've no idea if Skoda and VW share the same software or not. I'm sure one of the techy people on here can fill in the gaps.

My understanding (well from the dealer) that the official expected service intervals are 15km / 30km which work out at 9375 miles / 18,750 miles respectively.

To answer your near 1k miles I think the clues in the 20k VARIABLE service.....

I wouldn't leave it until 19.5k if your car is saying 700 miles until service. It's really not worth the hassle of warranty issues if you go outwith the service schedule.

IIRC variable implies a max of 2 years or 20k miles between services

IIRC variable implies a max of 2 years or 20k miles between services

Thats what i'm saying a maximum of 2 years or 30,000 km which works out at 18750 miles. Had a whole thing with my dealer who couldn't reset the service variable interval correctly on my vRS (came up telling me due in 9400 miles). That was the official line from Skoda 6 months ago a maximum of 2 years or 30,000km (when mine was reset correctly it displayed 18,700 miles to next service).

Same problem here too!! Comes up as 9400 miles if it is in fixed service.

I tried this on my MK1 and they said no they would not do any warranty work but wanted £100 per hour for servicing:eek:

That was Breeze VW Poole.

You are indeed correct on both points , though it's possibly not worth the bother. If you sell privately the benefits of having a main dealer service history probably outweigh the fifty quid a time you might save each time

Dr. Z is correct, if I were buying a newish car privately secondhand then I would expect to see a book full of dealer stamps. If some were missing or independents I would either walk away or negotiate a discount to factor in future losses as a result of the incomplete main dealer service history. Some dealers also look for full main dealer history when taking the car in p/ex and the amount they knock off could be more than the savings you made earlier.

so will it be fine for warrenty etc if i dont take it in till 19,500miles even through ive got 700 miles left on maxi dot but over 1k miles on odometer?

It's an either/or situation. It'll be 700 miles or however many days WHICHEVER COMES FIRST i.e. a drive to Scotland and back will mean you will probably need to service the car when you get back, whereas if you just drive locally you'll probably run out of days before you do 700 miles.

My vRS had it's first variable service at about 9000 miles, short journeys doesn't seem to be good :(.

Same problem here too!! Comes up as 9400 miles if it is in fixed service.

Turns out that the mechanic in my Dealer was using the manual reset (only for fixed interval servicing) using the trip computer button on the dash and not resetting it correctly to variable (took 2 further attempts after the service for them to do it right ).

Should be ok for warranty, the ecu will show that the service is overdue though, stating "Service Now" when you switch on the ignition. I went over about 500 miles, just because the dealer couldnt fit me in until that point.

When it reaches zero miles the day counter also sets to zero

9000 miles? Are you sure it's not set to fixed?

I disagree personally. As long as the book is stamped and the work done correctly i.e. a specialist and using the correct parts; then I would be happy.

I have come across the same level of incompetence in both dealers and independents and nationally recogonised firms scuhas a Nationwide.

The servicing itself is more important imo than who did it.

9000 miles? Are you sure it's not set to fixed?

Yep, definitely on variable, only 6 miles drive through Brum to work.

Pretty sure ours is nearly on 19k, and no service warning yet.

Can someone remind me how to check what the car thinks it will be?

yes turn off engine to the position you insert key on, hold down trip reset and keep it held down till it comes up on display. the deleted trip mileage goes but reappears as soon as it shows what mileage you have left. hope that helps.

did read through the variable leaflet in my car pack today, it recommends variable for those doing at least 25 miles a day, preferable not in stop start traffic or going up and down steep hills or towing anything. basically from what i can make out sit on a motorway that is flat:rofl:

Does it make any mention of driving hundreds of miles across Europe, flat out down autobahns or racing down runways? :P

No, but I can strongly suggest additional filter and oil changes :D

Is that a typo?

You need to turn the ignition ON (without starting the engine) then press and hold the trip reset button
