What's that buzz noise when opening drivers door?

Featured Replies

Hopefully its not an annoying repost but I did a search and couldnt find anything.

But what is that buzz noise you get when opening the drivers door? Its like a little motor going or something. Is it the fuel pump? although turning the ignition on (but not starting the car) gives you the fuel pump priming noise.

It's the fuel pump priming.

If it's as your getting in ... I'd also go with fuel pump priming.

If it's as your getting out ... you've left your lights on!

i was going to suggest lights on, but I could not remember if it was a buzz type sound or a ping ping ping

I'd go with "lights on" too, particularly if you often park up with the lights on and an indicator selected, then switch the engine and lights off.

I wouldn't say the lights-on alarm sounds like a small motor...

The fuel pump primes when you open the door so I would go with that.

Fuel pump I reckon

:iagree:

I never knew this, I will have to listen for mine :D

The fuel pump does prime, but if it's on a petrol car it could also be the throttle body.

Sorry should have said it's when getting in, its a faint buzz, like a motor. But seems to come from the front of the car, engine area.

I thought fuel pump too but when turning the ignition on you can hear another buzz which I thought was the fuel pump?

Car is petrol (2002 vRS), so throttle body hmmm, could that be it?

Errr .......It's the fuel pump.

When you open the drivers door after being parked up for a while the fuel primes to get ready for starting. If you have only been stopped a few minutes it won't do as the fuel system still hasn't drained back too the tank, so doesn't need priming as theres already fuel in the line under pressure.

You can't really hear the throttle body spinning for in the cabin, only under the bonnet.

The second (ignition)buzz you mention I am unsure about, I alway assume it's either aircon, airbag, or abs related, may even be the fuel again as your just about too start the car for sure this time (seeing as you have turned the key in the barrel, as oppossed to just opening the drivers door).

Clever........" How does the car know you're going to start it " you may just be getting your brolly  ...........Magic ;)On a serious note, if you don't start the car does the Fuel in the pump drain off ??

The fuel system will automatically lose pressure over time and drain back into the tank which is why, if you go to open the door again a couple of hours later, you'll hear the pump doing it's thing again.

Which is why *I think* it does it again when you turn the key in the barrel.

And yes it does drain back in to the tank if you sit there for a while you can hear it trickling through the lines iirc

How does petrol "drain" up?

Yep, if you pen the bonnet and put your hand on the throttle body whilst getting somone to open the door you'll see.

I don't think there is an electric fuel pump under the bonnet.
