1996 passat 1.9td into 2000 felicia

Featured Replies

hi, I have a 1996 td passat which I am going to scrap.

Does anyone know if i could take the head and turbo off and put it onto ny 2000 1.9d felicia estate

Cheers

Andy

Also, does anyone know if the na diesel has the same pistons as the td. I also have an intercooler and instructions on how to up the power on the td.

From memory- it's been a while, I think the piston /con rod design are different between the earlier 1.9 D & TD versions- Turbo pistons I think have oil spray nozzle on the con rod. I may be wrong.. while the bits may bolt up you may find it won't live very long especially if you up the boost etc

I'd think it would be easier to swap the entire engine, than just the head and turbo. If nothing else, the turbo engine is likely to run a lower CR than the atmo, and have different fuelling.

Of course, all that presumes that both engines are mechanical injection units.

hi, and thanks!

I did intend to fit the entire engine but don't know if the td lump has the same holes to fit the skoda mounts. To look at the engines they are the same engine, but i would need to remove the timing gear to remove the back plate to find out, as the skoda has the mount on the end of the engine whereas the passat doesn't, i would also have to change the sumps, etc as the passat td is canted well back in the engine bay as apposed to the skoda tilted forward.

they are both mechanical injection, and i think if it works it would be an shame not to as the td was i would say cheaper to run with far better flexibility top gear performance.

cheers

Andy

Check out the thread on the 2.0l Felicia transplant then mate. Lots of sensible tips, how to make engine mounts, potential issues etcs in that.

will do thanks!

It was a very interesting thread, the fabricational skills of Teflon Tom far exceed what I can do, But it has made me decide that the 1.9td is definately going in !!!

as already stated, just put the whole thing in rather than swapping stuff round, the td head will physically fit the block on the n/a unit but there are major differences in the injection system and it would be a real head ache to sort out

fortunately as you are starting with a diesel you will have many of the components already, what is the engine code of the engine you want to stick in??

at the very least you will need to either fabricate or do a cut 'n' shut on the exhaust downpipe\

Hi, it is the AAZ td engine, as for the downpipe i made the one that is on the felica 2 now by cutting the flange and cat out of the old one, added a new flexi section, and the 90 bend off an old accord! it aint pretty but it holds:thumbup:

I had just started welding and i ran out of gas for the welder and my house is 4 miles from my garage, so i wasn't walking home at 11pm at night!!

:rubchin: right, the aaz unit is the high compression (22.5:1) umwelt diesel 74hp one, the turbo on those runs at a very very low pressure unless you fiddle with the wastegate return spring, physically the engine block is almost exactly the same :D

iirc the aaz unit has the same pistons as the felicia aef engine as they both have indirect injection, but they do however have a different injection pump, i've just phone my dad because i'm not an expert on diesel injection but he reckons it should fit on the existing engine along with the cylinder head and turbo. but you may have to do some trickery with the wiring plugs for the start/stop solenoids as they have different connectors

the one thing you will need to do if you do change the whole engine is swap over the mounting bracket for the water pump and power steering pump becasue on the felicia they sit in slightly different positions so it clears the radiator....

as for the downpipe, you could probably get away with 'bodging' it together but bear in mind there isn't much space between the driveshafts and subframe, also it has to allow the gear linkage enough room to play too

Well thanks for all that! I will pull the motor out tomorrow, and i will be looking to see if anywhere in Orkney has an engine stand for sale. I will just cut and leave plenty wire going to the s/s solenoids to keep the connections. i think i might have to change the sumps over too with the mounting brackets. the aaz lies well back in the vw. Im looking forward to tomorrow and can't wait to put the blown lump in.

I am going to try to fit the vw's brakes also since they are still solid discs but bigger and thicker and it just had reconditioned calipers and new pads put on it,

thanks for the info and i will be taking my fone tomorrow so i can take a couple of pics as i go. Andy

The Umwelt was at the time the cleanest production car engine. The turbo is (I think) just there to run the engine with excess air at all times for emissions. I'd expect the block to be very similar to the other IDI diesels, as TeflonTom says.

the brakes wont fit, in fact there is nothing else in the entire vw range that will fit the felicia/favorit.. if you do a search i'm sure you'll find info on it

Hi, i only drove the passat for a very short time, but there seemed to be a fair bit more go in it and it didn't drop revs in top like the n/a does, the passat forum recon that you can screw it up to give upto 100bhp (with an intercooler) without sacrificing too much economy on the longer runs. I think it should be a good conversion and can't wait to give it a bit more torque. The skoda is a good bit lighter too:D

  • Author

pity about the brakes, ah well back to the drawing board with that one.

the passat forum recon that you can screw it up to give upto 100bhp (with an intercooler)

be very careful:O one turn too far and you'll split the actuator diaphragm. also if you go 'too far' the turbo could run into surge and it will go bang! you could try fitting one of those little air tap fittings that you use in a fish tank to restrict the pressure going to the actuator instead

I would't screw it up far, it would be on fairly low boost still, only intercooled. I don't think that the turbo does a lot on that engine unless you are on full throttle, I would just be looking for a little bit more, a little bit earlier. Don't think that the felicia's gearbox would thank me for the extra stress:rolleyes:

I had ruined a "good" actuator on a saffy cosworth a few years back with them shenanigans:thumbdwn:

Ive got a lotus sunbeam for weekend heroics, the felicia is my daily runner/workhorse and it needs to be justifiably reliable/economical, which it is:thumbup:

a what?? bit before my time i think:)

2.2 lotus twin cam, delorto twin 45s, twin(uprated)cams, 178bhp, rwd, 950kgs, and about the size of a mk1 fiesta, except with 1979 suspension and brakes and steering.

those engines are an absolute pig to work on, try changing the tappet shims on one?? you have to turn the carrier over to put it on, hence they all fall out...

it was bad enough sussing out what all the timing marks meant, Thats one car my spanners won't be touching, I know what lotus stands for

 As per many many episodes of Scrapheap Challenge, don't cut things; unplug them where they're meant to unplug, and label them both ends as you unplug them! 1 hour spent there will save several getting the relocated engine running again.
