Creaking when accelerating & turning

Featured Replies

I have a '04 Fabia 1.9SDi, recently purchased as a Skoda approved used car.

It's done 60k so I would expect a few squeaks and creaks but after having the car for just a couple of weeks it's suddenly started creaking A LOT. It was fine up until 3 or 4 days ago.

Pulling away from a standstill, accelerating and slow tight turns are worst. It's hard to pinpoint where the creaking is coming from and I don't think it's all from the same place.

On several occasions there's been a very pronounced creaking from somewhere up front when lifting the clutch, other times i'm sure there's been some creaking under the gear stick area, but most of the time I think it's somewhere from the front seats backwards (sorry about the vagueness).

I've got a 12mth dealer Warranty so will go back to them if I have to but I thought i'd post on here first just in case there's something obvious that I can sort myself.

Thanks in advance.

Sure it's not the seat base? You move around quite a lot in your seat when manoeuvring, both due to centrifugal force in turns and Newton's third law when moving your arms and legs to do stuff...

I couldn't say for certain that it's not that but I have sat in the seat and pushed against it when stationary and it's not made a sound.. Is there an easy way to tell if it is that?

Try adjusting the height a fraction. I believe the creak is down to the height adjuster...

It's probably that your sway bar bushings are worn - the sway bar is the part of your suspension which reduces body roll. The bushings are made of rubber and mounted on the control arms of the sway bar - they absorb vibration and during sharp turns prevent metal on metal contact from twists of the sway bar. Warranty might not cover it, as the bushings are subject to wear and tear. They ain't that expensive to replace though - £60-£70 maybe.

I'd have said that initially were it not for the comments about the clutch pedal and transmission tunnel...

My seat used to squeak like buggery, until it broke. Needed welding to be repaired but still squeaks a bit.

The structure in the base seems to move more than in other cars.

Heat shield on the exhaust loose perhaps?

my seat has just started to squeek well annoying is there anything you can do like put abit of wd40 somewhere its only when pulling off from stand still or if you lean to the left alot whilst in the seat

Well, like I say, try adjusting it down or up a little. If it moves, it may be because one of the fore/aft adjuster teeth hasn't engages. In this case, pull up the handle an push back against the footreat as you release it. You should feel the seat twist ever-so slightly and hear a loud click as the last tooth engages. Makes mine solid as a rock, although SWMBO's still rocks a tiny bit...

Thanks everyone for all the input so far, really appreciate it. I'll try a few things tonight and post an update later/tomorrow.

Unlikely as it may seem the fix for the creaking sound I thought was coming from the driver's door/seat was some silicone grease between the two rubber buffers (on the bonnet near the bulkhead) and the wings. Hard to believe but it worked. Try it!

Well I tried adjusting driver and passenger seats as per the suggestions but no joy on that count.

I did however notice make a couple of observations when driving home last night:

- I don't seem to get any creaking when moving from a standstill in reverse, so it only seems to affect forward motion.

- I went home with a full boot last night (it's usually completely empty) and I think there was a little less creaking than usual.

- Some (though not all) of the creaking definately sounds like it originates somewhere below the handbrake/gearstick area.

Oracle,

My own car has this same problem., all be it intermittently. I took it in to the garage and stuck it up on the two post ramp. I noticed slight wear in the console bushes but nothing much more.

When i dropped the car back to the ground, with the keys in the ignition, the steering lock off and the car not running, i waggled the steering wheel and i could definately hear a creak. Drove the car back home, left it overnight and now the creak is gone again.

The other day i was removing my childs old car seat to fit a new one when i pushed down hard on the small part of the rear seat ( NSR seat cushion ) it creaked really badly, in fact just like the noise i hear when am driving.

So i am wondering if the extra weight of the seat and my son is making it creak.

Try pushing down on the seat cushion and see if your car makes any creaks.

Hi Peeps,

I had this problem too, creaked when accelerating and breaking. Creaking over speed bumps....real pain in the ****.

So I went to lummox who fitted me some Cupra console bushes....fixed the problem. Recommend lummox for any work needed.

I'd back this potential solution as well - the acid test is slowly over speed bumps and ON/OFF throttle - if that better describes when it sqeaks/creaks most than you have your problem nailed - also does it sound like rubber rubbing against rubber? Finally, with the engine off and the car parked level with the hand brake on, and out of gear - grab a front wheel and try to move it forwards and backwards - try both sides - that also points to the TCA rear bushes being needing replaced (and as above with Cupra ones).
