I see that (genuine, av mileage) Octy II TFSI vRS's have now breached the psychological £10k barrier on dealer forecourts, and there are now a few cars that are being advertised at <£10k (though most are still above). Now its breached the £10k mark do people think second hand values of Octy II vRS's (like mine) are set to drop quickly, or will they hold up..?

vRSFred

Every car value apart from chronic 1.2's is going to fall throgh the floor next year if the government proceeds with its idiotic VED changes.

Sadly yes as the first ones should now be coming through with no warranty so yea the only way is down and with the confusion of VED changes its going to affect it even more i mean look at MK1 vrs prices. You have to practically give them away at the moment

VRs diesel is only 150g CO2 so £120 next year (no increase at all), and then £125 the year after and the year after that. So no idiotic changes there, in fact quite the opposite. The less green prior engine only gets hit to £150 (a massive £5 increase) with another humonguous fiver the year after that, then hold for the next year! Then again if you buy a thirsty petrol car, and so damage the environment and use more of the increasingly scarce resources, up it goes..........

PS I don't think the changes are confusing either, look up VED changes on the net and they are really quite straightforward, yes affecting retrospectively, not confusing but it may be morally wrong.

Why?

My Octy II 2.0TDI is still only £125 a year to tax

Although lots of prudent people have bought diesels there are thousands and thousands of makes and models of cars that will be caught with a dramatic increase in the VED.

Hardly anyone will be buying big engined cars (and 2.0 is going to start to appear to be big).Hot Hatches will be frowned upon as much as 4x4's,second hand dealers won't particularly want anything where peole are going to be faced with £300 to £400 VED bills so there will be a large glut of cars worth nothing.

How many makes and model of 1.8 2.0 ,2.4,2.5 3.0 and 3.5 petrol cars can you name that have high emissions? Bet you could do a list as long as your arm then multiply that by the amount of people currently driving one

Why don't you think the car market is going to be affected in a massive way?

It looks like the PCP deal with a guaranteed future value was a good way to finance the car after all.

And once handed back there are going to be some stonking bargains to be had for big engined motors.

Noticed on the Volvo used car website

2007 S80 V8 AWD, under 8K on the clock, new price (before options) £37.5K

priced now at <£16K.

0-60 in 6.5s

4.4l of scandanavian loveliness ftw

I'd take £300 VED over FUBAR-ed turbos any day of the week :)

You're right about 'big' engines, my baseline is my 1.6 petrol which does a reasoanble 40.9mpg on combined cycle and tax still goes from £145 to £175. Its all well and good, newer cars having more efficient big engines but what about the people down the food chain who drive older cars?

as to the comment from someone "Then again if you buy a thirsty petrol car, and so damage the environment and use more of the increasingly scarce resources, up it goes.........."

Who does more damage? A 10k miles per year petrol or a 30K miles per year diesel?

Having said that, I think that once the new theft, sorry 'tax' system is in place things will go back to ormal. There will either be other reasons for not buying big cars or people will accept it and continue in a quest for power.

C'mon everyone thinks/wants the next GTI/VRs/ST will be more powerful than the last.

There is a twisted Tory logic in using tax to reduce environmental impact.

What it says is: "If you are rich you can pollute as much as you like, if you are poor then get on yer bike"

If politicians are serious about reducing pollution from gas guzzlers then they should stop using them themselves and maybe others will follow suit.

Paying £300 or £400 VED per year for a car whose value has come down by maybe £4K or £5K, doesn't actually sound that bad to me.

Perversely these VED changes might encourage some people to buy a thirsty V6 or V8 (or even a V12) who wouldn't have done before, simply because the car is a lot cheaper and looks a bargain (law of unintended consequences).

They've pushed it too far this time. If you drive a 'performance' car then you do expect higher running costs and you factor it in. This time they've rigged it to draw in as much money as possible under the guise of green issues.

But they've caught a lot of people with 'normal' cars who are seeing huge jumps in VED.

There is a point where people go f**k the environment and they've hit it with this. If the Gov thinks it's hated now wait till Mondeo man starts paying £300 for his 2.0 auto instead of £185 or your Zafira driver goes from £210 to £430.

Brown will be out on his ear by then but I doubt the Tories will change anything.

Hypothetical situation.

I have a car that emits 300 carbon dioxides.

I replace it for a new car that emits 120 carbon dioxides and will cost me a fair bit less a year in tax.

How many carbon dioxides were emitted producing the new, more efficient and environmentally friendly car?

They won't tell you that very easily. It would show that the Gov's new green VED is a load of ****** and that continuing to run an older car (even with low mpg) is greener than throwing out the old one for a newer high mpg car.

The same reason you won't get the figures for micro wind turbines. Big Feck off power stations are actually quite efficient and relatively green.

Plus global warming has kind of gone to the dogs this year with the Arctic ice not obeying the BBC and increasing rather than decreasing and the global temperature being down this year (queue images of ice falling into the sea which they won't mention also happened in the middle of the ice age).

Looked over an A8 tonight as the traffic was stationary. 4.2 Quattro on a 54 plate for 15k...parked next to an AMG merc for 16k on a 53...that's a lot of engine and car for not a lot of cash.

It's also another reason I'm pushing for a move to Liverpool, I can get the train each day and cut my annual milage by 20k :D MAke room for petrol and lpg, it's sooooo much better than diesel, I can't stand the stuff really.

So cheap TFSI's this time next year? Can't wait. :D

This weeks autocar has a piece on trade sales, Saying the only way people can get ride of there big BMW's is to trade them in for Mini's,

There are some big bargains out there if you don't do the mileage.

Very true

It's interesting that what was termed "global warming" is now being called "climate change" because things aren't working out quite the way the greenists told us they would.

It looks like we may have cut back on our energy consumption a bit too much - so get driving Briskoda people else every summer could turn out like this one :D

It's almost certainly an import - Motorpoint had hundreds of ex-Cyprus cars in 2006 at about £3000-£4500 off list with high specification, so it could well be one of those. The mileage is also quite a bit higher than most folks would like for a 2 year old car. And that's assuming it's not been smashed and repaired or anything like that.

I'm saving for a Golf R32 :D lol

ive noticed its the same thing that people come up with "your car drinks fuel and is a gas guzzler" when actually this car is 10mpg better than my 1.6 astra.

It's all rubbish anyway!

My new commute to work will be 5-6 miles a day, and my so-called "gaz-guzzling performance car" will therefore contribute far less naughty carbon dioxides than my girlfriend's "economical" 1.2 Corsa doing 40 miles a day...
