Standard fabia VRS on track

Featured Replies

Just a range of questions really

If I want to take my VRS on a 4-5 hour track day experiene with no modifications whatsoever

a) Will I break anything?

B) Should I go on old or new tyres?

c) Am I likely to need to brakes after?

d) How much fuel am I likely to use?

Thank you!

a) Will I break anything? NO

B) Should I go on old or new tyres? Old. Recent trackday both left hand side tyres had seen better days but they still have tread left. Remeber to up your tyres pressures by about 5psi and then monitor them after each session.

c) Am I likely to need to brakes after? NO but I would change your brake fluid to super dot 4 or 5.1 before you go.

d) How much fuel am I likely to use? You'll get about 17mpg

What he said but IME if you do a lot of laps you will probably kick carp into your drop links. Not too much of a drama they cost under £20 and take 15 mins to fit even for a novice.

I also used to change the oil before too.

Just as a note, the car cost me a fair whack of my savings and I will definitely NOT be pushing the car to it's limits, just having a nice spirited drive around a race track with no Mr Policeman to worry about.

Take it as far as feels right

When and where are you doing this young man :)

Agree.

If you can try booking the instructor for a session if the prce is right. Most trackdays offer some sort of tuition.

:D Did you recognise me yesterday by the way?

Cadwell Park, November - see the track days forum. Not sure about it yet, weighing up my options and deciding if or if not I want to take such a nice car around a track or if I want to buy something older and take that.

No sorry buddy, Where abouts did you see me?

Furbies are great on the track

You did, I was in the blue peugeot 306 with my girlfriend - waved at you and you waved back but you obviously didn't know it was me - :D

Not in the red rockett then. I saw your mum in the blue vrs the day before

lots of laps will kill the front brakes, i've had standard pads on fire

make the most of any sighting laps you do

don't go hell for leather as soon as you are on the track , take it easy , find the corner lines/apex's, keep your eyes on your mirrors as well as the track

i do about 8-10 laps in a session , then bring the car in to let it cool down for a bit, letting the engine idle for a good few minutes before switching off

the car is ok in standard form , but will benefit from the rear ARB even with standard suspension

Thanks to everyone who's contributed so far

What do people say to taking a passenger around?

How much is a track day likely to reduce the lifespan of my engine by, if at all? (Bearing in mind I wouldn't be taking it above 3500rpm)

oh you will be taking it above 3500rpm

passengers will be ok , only in the front though , don't let them egg you on to go faster though

i've done 3 track days at Oulton park, 20 laps at the Ring, and over 50 laps at Spa , i've not had any problems with mine , now at 63k miles, regular oil changes with mine though

How long is a piece of string?

Let it cool down properly, make sure you have good clean oil and it will be fine. BTW if your not going to take it about 3500 you will probably just become a mobile chicane. Just get on there and give it some!

On the road it always feels like the power drops off after 3500rpm, although I understand this may be an illusion :)

peak power is 4K or just before. Std maps dies off after that but you will still find you push past 4K the odd time depending on the track.

:D I'll happily push to 4k but was under the impression that diesels didn't like to be revved like that :)

Well I always found there was nothing worthwhile past 3.5k on the standard map. Your mileage may vary.

(with the REVO 4k is a breeze, and a nice cloud of soot)

Check out Awesome's web site and have a look at the rolling road results. You find with a decent map they can pull to 4.5K.

Try and factor a "cooling down lap" into your track time, if at all possible, or go for a leisurely spin around the car-parks / pit-areas when your laps are over before switching off. Once you leave the track, use your cadence braking to slow down and stop and don't sit with your foot on the brake pedal.

If you have a [front-seat] passenger, ask if he / she can do "mirror-duty" on that side of the car until you get used to needing at least four pairs of eyes all the time.

Enjoy yourself and above all come home safe.
