Remap... why can't I bring myself to do it?

Featured Replies

When you buy your insurance over the phone they ask "has the car been modified in any way?", and you answer "no, not to my knowledge". They don't expect you to strip the car when you buy it and check the originality of every component.

If you knew nothing about cars, how the hell would you know if your car was remapped or not, and why would you care. I don't think anyone is ever going to care, unless you crashed because of a modification on the car, or you crashed at 180mph!

But they can use technicalities like that to get out of paying if they want.

Exactly, why would an insurance company want to pay out if they can find a reason not too.

basically we don't live in a 'free' world like people like to believe.

we're just slaves to the governement and do what we're told to.

When's this revolution gonna kick off?! Bring back common sense, responsibility and honesty.... or did we ever have that?

I'm off to Russia.

Bugger it, I'm doing it :D

Well... I still haven't done it :rotz:

...BUT it is booked in for a Stage 1 Revo on Thursday :D:thumbup:

Really looking forward to getting it done and pleased that the insurance increase is 'only' £10 a month which I've already sorted out :)

Congratulations!!! You won't regret it :D

I finally took the plunge last month and I absolutely love it. Overtaking is a dream now and I'm getting much better MPGs.

I went for Angel Tuning with a +40 BHP (claimed) but it suits me fine.

Insurance was an extra £60 for the year

Good luck and enjoy it

Yeah you will love it! After owning my vrs for two years, had a revo stage 1 done couple months ago, seem's to get better and better over time, so much more grunt!

Anothe thing to consider is when you come to sell the car (if you plan to sell) a remap is generally seen as a BAD point! Also for insurance it isn't good as mentioned earlier.

Other than that a worthwhile upgrade.

That is a good point and I checked with the place that is doing it if they would be happy to put it back to standard when I sell and they said that they could either "switch it off" or reflash it back to standard which would mean losing the software. Not sure what switching it off means but I'm just happy I can put it back to stock :)

My insurance is still the right side of £500 so I'm happy :)

Just a quick question- at the moment in its totally stock state my car doesn't seem to like V-Power one bit and runs much smoother on supermarket 97 RON SUL which I've got a tank full of at the moment. With a generic stage 1 will the fact that I'm running 97 RON and not 99RON mean that the remap will be tuned less? Or does it not matter on a generic map as there is no tuning to the individual car?

I should probably ask this in the Revo board but its not really worth a thread of its own.

97 will be fine, I run Tesco 99 most of the time. V Power makes no bum dyno difference.

You can get a Revo sps or select and switch it off yourself.

I have a Revo select 2 and can specify RON maps 95,99 and 101. Got it for £30 off ebay. Another benefit is the anti theft which completely disables the ECU.

I would recommend checking your spark plugs are torqued correctly beforehand. I had an issue with the coil packs popping up due to gas escaping past the (incorrectly torqued) plugs which lifted the coilpacks enough to cause a stutter. This was not an issue before the remap so the extra boost probably highlighted it.

Who are you insuring with? I am renewing in August and am looking for good deals.

I tourqued them down properly but that was getting on for a year ago so I'll give them a tweak up. Thanks for the tip guys :)

On the select switch. Do you simply plug it in after the map has been done? Wouldn't it need to be set to your individual car?

Hi Folks

Haven't been on site for ages and a great topic this one. Your answers convince me to remap the one niggling thought is my elegance estate has covered 142500 miles. It runs perfect with no oil consumption. Clutch is original but no slip and gearbox still as smooth as day one. Would you remap at this mileage or just try and keep saving for a vrs. Good ones getting hard to find for my budget. I was thinking of using 'More bhp' in Middlewich who is charging 175 for a remap taking it to 195bhp and 207torque.

Any answers much appreciated.

Yes it really is that simple. here are the full instructions

1. Locate the OBD-II port.

Refer to owner’s manual.

2. Turn ignition on, wait 10 seconds.

3. Select setting on SPS.

4. Connect SPS to OBD-II port.

5. SPS will start beeping after a few seconds.

6. Remove SPS when beeping is active.

7. Repeat steps 3-6 as desired.

8. Start engine.

As stated I went with sps2 which is the equivelant of the new select.

There is also sps3 and select+ which allow you to tweak timing, fueling and boost to personal preference. I didn't want to touch these settings even by accident though.

sps1 is limited to turning map on/off and immobilising ECU

Well its done, not quite smooth sailing but all fine in the end.

Basically after waiting a little while with my head stuck in a copy of Banzai the chap came over and said "Are you ready to take it for a spin to make sure you are happy with it? I'm sure you will be"

So off we went, as is always the case in these situations it was traffic all the way. We then came to a roundabout and with the road clear the other way I was told to go right round and blat it back. Finally a chance to open the taps :P So I come off the roundabout in 2nd, floor it, hit 4000 RPM and the power just dies and I'm greeted with a flashing engine management light

The guy who was with me said that it was probably just a boost pipe or coil pack and to head back so we could sort it. As I nursed the car along it was clear it was running on 3 cylinders so we were pretty certain it was a coilpack. Not too surprising as my car is still on its originals. After diagnosing Cylinder 1 miss firing they swapped the coil pack for one they had lying around which I was told to just return as and when I can which was very generous.

Out for another blast and all was good :D Really can't rate Clive Atthowe highly enough, their service was spot on and the two chaps that I spoke with were both straight up guys. Basically they have pretty much secured my future servicing work.

As for the map itself, I'll be honest at first (litterally the first few times I nailed it) I was a bit underwhelmed. As I drove it more I was more impressed. The power is smooth and progressive and its so easy to keep it in the zone.

I went out for a drive an hour ago and my face was pretty much stuck in this- :D position whilst SWMBO's was more

With Revo's current offer I can get an SPS switch for £100 off RRP if I order within 28 days and I am tempted but will sleep on it for a couple of nights I think.

Yep i know how you feel, at first i was thinking the same but now after a couple of months the power seems alot better and smoother, dont forget the ecu will re learn so should get better with more miles.

Just out of interest are you running standard dv?

Yeah original dump valve on mine. Heavy throttle and short shifting now gives a fantastic sound :P

Just noticed that I've got the boost and timing settings on the paperwork they gave me- timing: 6 Boost:6 fuel is left blank. No idea what those figures mean though :o
