Remap... why can't I bring myself to do it?

Featured Replies

Ok, will probably seem weird to you guys but I've now had my vRS for 13 months and every time I sell myself the idea of getting it remapped I can't bring myself to do it

For example last night I had decided I was definitely going to get it done, then today I pulled out of the dump to a nice empty stretch of road, planted it in first tyres chirping all the way up to 6k, bung it in second with a satisfying screach and hint of a squirm as the car continued struggling for grip.... then a toff on a horse stepped out from a field infront of me. Anyway, point being I was ':D:D' and thinking "do I really need anymore than that?" well of course I don't need it, but do I want it :P

I think the thing putting me off it that the car runs like a dream and I'm worried that a remap is going to stuff that right up and I'll be left with a car plagued with hesitation which eats clutches and recirc valves for breakfast. Then there is the huge choice of remaps themselves. I have a local REVO franchise and a local(ish) JABBA one so I do a google and for REVO I get- great... rubbish... my car now runs like ****... my car now beats Enzo's off the line... etc etc same story for JABBA. How can the same bit of code on the same engine give so many different results. All in all I'm very confused :(

So is anyone else on the brink of getting a mod done but can't commit to having it done or am I the only big girls blouse on the forum :o ?

If you're happy with the way it is then why bother even thinking about it? If it ain't broke don't fix it.......

i feel the same too,

there are too many too choose from, whats the best price, what gives the most bhp/torque, im spoilt for choice and i know which ever i buy i know ill be thinking did i make the best choice, would the other 1 have given me more power?

its mad

go along to a meet and ask for rides or drives of other members cars that are mapped to get an idea for yourself :)

I've vaguely considered getting a remap at some later date but the thing that makes me nervous is that it seems too easy. There must be some downsides.

Also, like you, I am concerned by all the opposing views about the same item(s).

As others have said, if you're not sure, leave it for now.

I've not had mine done for the simple reason that I think the standard power is plenty. I've got the uprated suspebnsion and anti-roll bar, and I'm about to get the big brakes, but I really see no need for extra power.

Thanks for your opinions :)

For me the fact I'll be going from 180 to 200 or so BHP means very little to me. What does tempt me are the gains lower down the rev range.

When I'm realy giving it beans I'm rarely left thinking that I need more, big dolops of extra oomph in the mid range however does sound like a nice proposition :D

Forget the bhp figures the torque on a mapped car makes it so much better on a day to day basis. I have a Revo stage 1 and wish I had done it sooner. Power is ok on the standard car but map it and it's a different car altogether

Revo is very tempting if I can ever get round to putting my money where my mouth is because there is a place in Norwich. For a Jabba I'd have to take a trip to Bury St. Edmonds which isn't a problem in itself as long as I don't have to go back if things aren't right with it.

I'm with you on this one. I just know that mine would be the one car out of a hundred that would encounter problems post remap. It runs so well now that I don't want to tempt fate.

Then there is the insurance issue. The hike in insurance is a recurring expense, which all adds up. I guess that the insurance company doesn't need to know, but in the stylee of Earl - it would be bad karma. I know of people who do all sorts to their cars, don't tell the insurance companies and get away with it. Again, I'd be the numpty that would not declare, have a smash and then be found out.

I'd want to do the rear ARB, then a remap, but like you, something stops me from taking that leap of faith. Perhaps we just need to go for it and live on the edge....

You can always get a trial remap.

There are also companies which let you buy the map and if you don't like it will put it back to standard for you, all your cash is then returned.

If your happy with the power look to some handling mods or ICE if your into that or even give your car a good detail. One thing that would be worthwhile is to replace the dogbone mount which will reduce the wheel hop when you accelerate hard in lower gears. It's a simple & cheap mod thats very effective and worth doing.

I hated the powerflex dog bone mount and I've put the standard one back in. Too much noise and vibration in normal driving for me. I may just put it back in if I do another track day though.

On the re-map if your not sure don't do it. But if you do decide to have it done go somewhere local. That's one of the main reasons I went to Awesome for mine. (and Sarah makes a good brew )

You want to try the powerflex dogbone mount in a TDI :D then you will know about noise and vibration :D incidently thats why I've now got the Super Pro mount. You can just fit 1/2 of the powerflex which does improve things, so I'm told by Awesome

I think a remap is the simplest and most :D :D for the money.

But of course there are downsides:

Higher insurance

More strain on the engine components = more likelihood of failure

If there are existing minor problems they may become apparent after a remap

Loss of warranty if the car's nearly new

But IMHO it's still worth doing - and personally I've had no issues since mine (touch wood) and fuel economy is about the same.

Mine was dona at about 1 year old and 11,000 miles by JBS.

No point getting into the "whose is best" debate as we all have differing opinions. Choose a respected tuner as near as you can get to home and then it's easy to go back if there's problems, and a proper company will be happy to work with you to fix any issues.

the reason that i havent got a remap is that if the car goes any faster, i will:

a) kill myself

B) lose my license

basically im unfit for public use, and should be captured in some sort of giant man net.

on a more serious note.... just think how many pints you could buy for £350!!!

Mine cost 475 quid!

Lordrobs

I had mine for a year before i decided i wanted a cheap(relatively) speed boost, now one year later i can truthfully say i have had no issues at all,ok the insurance is a little more but the fuel consumption is no different and the extra torque allows me to indulge my lazy driving style a little more.

At the end of the day you have to be happy with your decision, and if you have any doubt you will always find fault in whichever map you go for:)

Thanks again everyone. Great to get some opinions and experiences.

For me having a bit more go when you go for those lazy 5th gear overtakes on the motorway would be the main reason to get it done and it does seem that this is where a remap comes into its own.

Will mull it over a bit more. At the end of the day I'm in no rush as with all the uncertainty with fuel prices and taxtion I think I'll be keeping the old girl a bit longer than I had planned rather than getting rid of it in a year or so in favour of an ST220.

The only car on the market that tempts me at the moment is the Scirroco 1.4 TFSI and at what they cost brand new it will be many years before they are in my reach :D

I do about 25000 miles a year and as my car is essential for work i was nervous on having it remapped.

@12000 miles later

1/ Clutch is fine

2/ Insurance with Chris Knot cheaper than Admiral when standard

3/ Torque is fantastic

4/ Fuel consumption up about 2 miles per gallon

5/ Big grins allround!

Get it done, most if you dont like it will revert you back to your default settings if you are not happy!

Yeah even before i got my vrs i was thinking first thing to do is get it remapped, got one and a year later... no remap!

I was quite surprised by how well it pulls, had a corrado g60 pushing 195bhp and it feels just as quick! Now and again i think yeah!!! im going to get it done then i think like you, do i really need too?

So money as been spent else where for now which i now feel was the best way to go like front and rear arb, polybushes, koni fsd's, strut brace's and decent tyres. etc :D

So when i have finished all the other bits i want to sort out, then i may get it remapped. So if you feel it's quick enough for you why not look to spend money else where on the car.:D

Jesssss........LOUSIE!!!!!!!!

I had a custome Code cost £267.00 (INC VAT) 40% discount @ Gti International

Changed the car completly and my mates convinced me too do it... i am glad they did it!

Feels like a real turbo.... when you hit boost... its very noticeable!

What really convinced me is the shear no.s of people who were getting it done......they were making a fortune (even at the discounted price)

Cheapest power gain ever.....

I also thought the car was quick enough

i done it cuz i could......

When i first drove it hard after the re-map...

It really got my stomarch going.... the unexpected excellent gain makes you smile for ages!!!

DO it!

if u do remap it make sure ur go for a lower torque one.... i regret re-remapping mine. doesnt seem to accelerate as fast as it was before... more of a smooth curve of power rather than a sudden boost at 2750rpm

Check out Revotechnik.com. The power garphs are on there and they are lovely and smooth. I got my 1.8T Elegance done by Revo. That took it from 150bhp and 160nm to 207bhp and 232nm. 57bhp and 72nm torque for £250 (I know a former revo dealer) is just unbeatable. Fuel economy went up as well!

Go to Revo and ask about their 5 hour test run. They remap your car and after 5 hours driving time (driving time not actual time so if you drive home then don't use your car for a week after it'll still be mapped) it resets back to stock. No commitment to buy and I'm sure you'll be hooked.

Best thing I ever did. Go for it.

I have a switchable remap - it's on standard at the moment and believe you me - it feels really slow :eek:

The wave of torque is what makes the difference - overtaking is a breeze with the remap
