Smelly Air Con

Featured Replies

Replacement of the dust and pollen filter is included in the inspection service which your car had.

If I read it correctly (just passed my eyes over it yesterday, 18/06/04), Farmers Skoda Leicester are doing Air-con services at

Halfords do an air-con de-odourising spray. Saw it the other day.

how do you use it?

I dont know..but it was in an aerosol..so must just spray.

will nip down to halfords later and hav a butchers. thanx

It's from Comma, costs

What has worked for me to cure smelly air con, on both my current Octavia and my last Nissan is:

Put the blower on #2, set it to pull fresh air in, turn on the A/C. Open all the windows. Open the hood, and spray-mist windex or any ammonia based window cleaner into the air intake vent/grille just below the windscreen. Then turn off the blower and let it sit.

Idea being that it's sucking in ammonia, the ammonia evaporates into the air, then when it passes over the cold evaporator, it condenses back into a liquid. The ammonia liquid on the evaporator will kill the bacteria/mould. Musty smell goes away after a few days.

I used to have a pretty smelly a/c not too long after getting the Octavia brand new. I live in the Caribbean and you HAVE to run the A/C on recirc if you don't want to roast in the car.

Over the long term, what definitely helps is switching off the A/C button and leaving the blower running a little while before reaching your destination. That helps dry off the evaporator and helps prevent the mould and bacteria from developing. I've developed a habit of doing this at a certain intersection before I reach home, and at a certain intersection before I reach the office. I timed it so that by the time I reach my destination, the blower has just started to vent warm air.
