Should I change water pump too? Advice, please

Featured Replies

This autumn/winter both  my Felly and SWMBOs Octy need a fresh cambelt (the "four year rule").

The Octy has 115,000 miles on the clocck (second cambelt) so might be wise to get a new waterpump too while the mechanic is there.

But what about my Felly? Previous owner replaced a broken water pump four years ago (and fitted a new belt) but since then it has rolled not more than 30,000 miles. Surely the pump will last for another 50,000 or so? Or should I empty my wallet completely and get a new one?

Stick with the one on it

What engine has your feral fervid felicia got?

:iagree:

if it's the 1.6 petrol model, change it at the same time as changing the belt, if it's a 1.3 don't worry about it till it pops, it's not driven by the timing belt on the 1.3

Thanks. Yes, it's the 1.6, so I follow the majority and change the pump at the same time (and make sure I get the one with metal impeller). I guess the risk is small, but if it breaks lots of things may happen

afaik there isn't a metal impeller version of that pump available

Thanks for that information. The more reason to change it then.

I had an Astra 95 shape with a 1.4 engine (8v). Belt changes were every 40k miles. Are Vauxhall engines the same where the water pump is driven by that belt cause I never changed the water pump when the belt was changed.

I always go on the replace when needed basis.

Don't know about vauxhalls, but on my old Nissan the belt also drove the waterpump. I changed it at the third belt change (120k miles) mainly because half of the job (or more) is already done when the old belt is removed.

Still I think that 30k miles (my present situation) is an incredibly short interval. But previous owner had to change it once, so maybe the pump is a weak spot on the AEE engine? And should it break so that the belt cogs over it would be a real nuisance, mildly put.

I thought belt changes on Skodas were every 60k miles unless it's different in Sweden?

It's 60k alright - or four years, whichever comes first, and the previous owner's change of pump and belt was four years ago...

My Fabia has just turned 4 and I'm taking it to the Lummox for a service, new belt and water pump even though it's only done 26K. I'd rather have it done than risk it. Might be a different choice at dealer prices though:rolleyes:

My Felly has just hit 110k

Provided it gets to 120k thats when I'll get the belt/water pump replaced.

Theres no record of belt/pump changes on my car only a fully stamped service book. Only when I got it did I keep a full record.

Should be good for another 120k miles when changed though.
