Hi I've got an 05 VRS Which i'm going to be owning for the next 4 years and i was thinking what people thought about servicing the car myself ie all the easier bits not belts or changing turbos!!

I just don't think a 05 car in 2012 will be changed in value by home servicing + plus i'm tight!!!

I have serviced my 53 plate vrs since it was two years old, I always use OEM filters and Mobile synthetic lubricants. Its very easy to work on and I tend to follow the maintenance plan in the haynes manual as a guide.

I had considered continuing to get my vrs serviced by the local Skoda dealership after it came out of warranty but they made such mess of the second service I vowed never to let them near my car again.

I'm not sure how not having a Skoda service history may or may not effect future residuals but TBH I dont care... I enjoy my vrs so much that I have no intention of ever selling it.

I have serviced my Octavia RS since the warranty ran out in 06. I have done only the basic stuff myself, oil, oil filter, pollen filter, plugs, throttle body cleaning, window regulator replacement. When it comes to things more technical like cambelt/ tensioners/ pulleys, etc., I have sourced a local VW mechanic to do the work. My car has just turned 70k miles this week, and is still running very well.

My last service on my 05 Fabia vRS was done by an independent, after I lost faith in the local dealer. I serviced my last car (A3 TDI, so mechanically similar to an Octy) myself: It's pretty easy.

DIY is the way. Just make sure you don't get slack and keep up to date on oil/filter services. The brakes are nice and easy to work on aswell, which is a nice change for me coming from a car with stupidly complicated drum brakes....

There are some really helpful guys on this forum, so if you do ever get stuck, there's always aomeone on here with some words of wisdom to help you through.

I have done:

- oil + filters (several times)

- fuel filter

- shocks (front and back)

- brakes (pads and disks, front and back)

- cambelt (both belts & water pump) change

- added a towbar (ok, so not quite servicing)

- fixed the wiper linkage

- new f/n/s door glass

- replaced f/o/s door release cable

- ARB bushes

All were quite easy - even the cambelt, but that was quite time consuming!

aslong as you keep recipts in order as proof that work has been done then there no reason to worry about it imo. i put service recipts into envelopes and any other recipts for parts or upgrades etc together in another envelope.

Yes....Haynes manuals do cover the octy vrs.
