What to do? Swap for Ibiza Cupra TDI

Featured Replies

A local dealer has offered me a strait swap for my 55 plate VRS.

Bought for £7200

My spec is 41k miles

Remap to arround 170bhp

Custom Leather interior

Mint condition

Skoda Warrenty (4 months)

List price £8000

The Cupra is a 54 plate

47k miles

No leather

It has climate control but I dont think this is air con.

I have driven the Cupra. Its nice pretty much exactly the same performance (although the cupra's breaks are quality).

Really not sure what to do??

What do you guyes think?

Climate control is better than air con.

I say do it.

Wack a new clutch on the cupra and get it remapped, and add a rear anti roll bar.

Job done. No more modding needed.

Are you sure? So will it go cold just like aircon? This is a really big point for me?

Climate control is better than aircon as you can set it to the exact desired temperature.

So it has a chiller and will need re-gasing etc

Sorry if this question seems stupid. I'm checking on google now and can't seem to find this answer.

Same maintainance required as an aircon system, just more sophisticated electronics

Basically normal air con is based on an on/off switch with a simple temperature dial.

Where as climate control you can set it to an exact temperature and the car will automatically "control" the "climate" in your car to keep it at that temperature.

Sweet! I'll go for it!

Will miss the leather.. :( The side support isn't as good ether.

But everything else is nice. Just have to see how much the insurance company want to charge me. Group 16 seems a bit high to me.

i'd stick with the VRS, does not sound like you will be gaining a lot. the AC stat in the VRS works pretty well plus it is mapped, leathered and is not as old. Why change?

He is offering the swap because he will make money out of it. Its a good deal for him, not necessarily for you.

Just put some 312mm brakes and a RARB on your VRS?

Thing is that costs money. The Cupra handles well out the box (needs an ARB though) amazing breaks and looks cool.

I will miss miss the leather. The performance is the same at the moment. If I decide to map the seat 180-190 (if i'm careful with the clutch) it will be faster due to the weight difference.

Oh but the leather... :(

As mentioned above the brakes are a world above a standard 288mm set up, its group 15 insurance ;)

Can remap to 200bhp.

However its closer to its next big service (60k) I reckon if you want to go for it, tell them to throw in the 50k service for free when you hit the 50k mark. Also if it hasnt already got the Seat Sport strut brace and your purchasing from a Seat garage, get them to throw on one of those for you, at cost price its under £50!

Cupra is probably going to be due a belt this year anyhow (four years).

FMIC as standard, quality brakes, more power (as standard) probably slightly better handling. If you want bigger power in the future the cupra has alot of standard spec which is suitable for the upgrade.

As the VRS/PD130 would need FMIC bigger brakes etc for more power.

Really the PD130 doesnt NEED a FMIC or bigger brakes - the SMIC and arch vents do a decent job with just a remap and the brakes are OK, if lacking feel.

I'd say the only mod you NEED if you remap it is a rear anti roll bar as the standard handling is crappo!

Don't we have semi-automatic climate control? If you read the manual, it states that the temperature is maintained unless the temperature control is in the extreme hot or cold position...

It's all down to personal preference.....i always considerd one of these and they are a bit rarer than the fabia !

in my eyes there a better car standard to a standard vrs but if you have changed bits on the fabia i can't see it being much better........

Yes, I thought the vRS had climatronic....a kinda mid point between basic air con and climate control. If you set the rotary knob to whatever temperature, it should maintain that temperature??

I'm sure when it came out, at least one review reckoned a remapped FR diesel was a better bet than a Cupra diesel. I guess cost new would have come into it, which obviously isn't an issue here, but having weighed up an FR vs. a vRS when I bought the Furby, I much prefer the way the Fabia looks, personally...

The Ibiza FR and Fabia VRS are both better in different ways.

I've read a few reviews where they pitted them against each other and the Fabia came out just in front simply because of its "boxy euro-chic looks" and that its ride quality is bettter, where as the FR seems to have harder suspension but doesnt handle any better.

I think this is one of those times where you think "oooh a new car!", but then your brain will eventually kick in and you will walk away.

Does have a lot of kit out of the box. And I miss the climate from my old Ibiza; I can confirm it does work better than the Fabia's system :)

Steve

Id swap in a heartbeat..

Never knew there was a Cupra only thought it was the FR :( (before i got my Fabia)

Well I went for it....

Its a BEAST!! Having driven it properly I can tell you it is faster! By quite a bit Not sure what the power output was on the VRS as the remap was done by a previous owner.

The handling and breaks are out of this world compared to the VRS. So happy with it!

Plans.

Full service with possible belt change (may need new disks too).

Alloy Refurb along with a couple of body touch ups (only very minor)

Rear ARB (Whiteline)

Vmaxx Coilovers

Re-map |180-190BHP with -300ft Torque. Dont fancy a new clutch and I didn't like the DMF wobble on the VRS remap.

I really missed the 106 GTi . I loved the VRS but it didn't make me feel as good when I took her for a spirited drive. I now have the feeling back. I also prefer the sportier looks. Everyone who's seen it has said i've made the right choice.

It may cost me a little more due to the upcoming service but... Its worth it...

Didn’t know the Cupra had a FMI... Why does it have the vents in the drivers front wheel arch then (as seen on the TT and the “piky mod”).

we need pics pics pics :D

Good call - Id have liked one but anything above a PD130 starts getting a bit silly on insurance if you're my age and kind of defies the point of a DERV then.
