Can I and should I improve my 1.4 MPi Fabia?

Featured Replies

In a thread, posted not so long ago, the honorable poster implied that people that try to improve 1.4 MPi engines performance wise don't have their minds where they should be. F*ck him :) Here I am.

After fiddling with my engine and making it go like a dream for 50kW engine I started to think if there's a possibility to make it go even better. A lot of VRS owners are remapping their engines, also adding intakes and something else. I'm wondering would that work with 1.4 aswell without messing up fuel economy real bad? I love the car and it's performance in urban areas as I don't need much to reach maximum speeds but I'm sick and tired of ******** with their last century Corollas and Golf IIIs flying past me on acceleration. It just doesn't go that well.

Call me crazy but I just want to know.

I had the same car, you cant polish a turd mate, save your pennies that you would spend upgrading the car and put it towards another one

Wouldn't call it a turd... How dare you! :D

I'll try and have a sensible debate despite your insults. Yes there is a limit to what you can do to this car and it is better to put the money towards a better one. In all cases, it is best just to spend the money on good engine oil, good tyres, regular servicing etc., to keep what is already there at its best. You can get better spark plugs for instance (e.g. Bosch super 4's), a better air filter/inlet etc., better wind screen wipers like the Bosch aero but there isn't a lot of point beyond that.

Without spending a lot of cash its not likely with the mods you sugest that you will have the effect you want. Pretty much any mod that gives up more power will have a negative effect on econamy. But with a bucket load of cash anything is possible:thumbup:

Haha, wrong expression to use, i loved the car, dont get me wrong, but wasnt exactly a thing built for performance.

:iagree:

the fabia is too heavy to make it worth it..

Strip it out. It'll be a little bit quicker, a little bit more economical and best of all free. :)

Sorry if I said bit harshly. I was in fun mood, not insulty mood.

Have good oil, have the Super 4's, I'll get Aero wipers tomorrow and I service it every once in a while ( by myself :D ).

Good people in Briskoda have spoken. Appreciate your input and I'll better spend my money on wax and cleaning products. Right now my car looks horrendous: full of scratches and it even has 2 or 3 rustpatches.

So, I need some advice what products do I need.

Also another thought popped in my mind: what about sound insulation? Can I improve that? :D

the fabia is already well inulated, there's loads of foam etc all over the place, headlining, floor doors etc etc

I had one of these, All I'd do is wait and get a tdi or a vrs like I did.

The only thing I did was add a Piercross induction kit because it cost me £18. It did sweet fa as predicted :P

I had a 1.4 MPI, loved it (first car...) but man it was gutless! Went through the 'boy racer' phase and stuck an induction kit on it. Sounded mad, but didn't make it any quicker and hurt the economy...though that may be a result of wanting to put your foot down to hear the noise!

Personally, what I would do is swap it for a diesel (even the 1.4 3-cyl is quite nippy, my dad has that in his Polo) and go down the well-established routes found on here

im aiming to get a fabia 1.4 in 2 months and i eventually plan on doing things to it :Di think you should fix body work ;) smooth it! slam it! chav it;) broom broom!

If its the 16v over the 8v(Mpi) then at least you have a head start, 100bhp against 68bhp

Mine felt like it had less than 68bhp

Have good oil, have the Super 4's, I'll get Aero wipers tomorrow and I service it every once in a while ( by myself :D ).

Dude - u got part number for the Super 4's? Cheers!

FX78 if I remember correctly. It's written up and stored with my car documents which are in car which is in garage outside and I'ts pretty damn late. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Btw, new plugs made a big difference.

Edit: After a bit of Googling I can tell you for sure it's FR78. There is also FR78X but it has wider spark gap. FR78 is the one to go for.

cheers! She had a green cotton filter in last night, intake pipe goin on hopefully next week sometime.

Currently in the garage havin new front and rear bushes put on. THink i am gonna soften up my coils - goes around corners great but my god do the bumps hurt haha.

BTW - I easily get 100 outta her with no mods whatsoever, cant say need any more than that.

A good summary of the Bosch super 4 part numbers for various Skoda/VW engine codes is available here:

BOSCH Super-4 Spark Plugs SKODA FABIA 1.0/1.4/2.0/VRS on eBay, also, Skoda, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Oct-08 13:58:08 BST)

The standard price is £19.99 for a set of 4 from Halfrauds, but you can get them cheaper here:

CSM Supplies :: SPARK PLUGS

(Although I've never ordered from them so can't vouch for them).

Whilst we are on the subject, are people's opinion that the Super 4's are the way to go? Anyone had experience of Beru Platinum or NGK Iridium? Any recommendations for HT leads?

On a private road or track I presume. :(

To the OP, depending on how much money you have you can do pretty much anything, i have a 1.4 mpi... Yep, 68bhp all the way! I can reccomend all of the mods I have done (see my sig) though these are all handling mods. However, as far as performance mods go, the 1.4 is not a good starting point, my plan is to drop a new engine in there, a 1.8T or similar. A lot of people on here told me to stop being stupid but I wanted to create something of a one off. The coversion is happening in january and is being funded by an insurance claim. Let me say, unless you have an adequate lump of cash, save up and buy a different car, the fabia weighs 1.3 tonnes for christ's sake!.PM me if you like and i'd be happy to help you out!

NGK Iridium was what i was lookin at but people tend to say super4's when i ask. Would be interested on opinions on the others tho. How much of a difference would new leads make?

Well, if I had a lot of money, I'd pick up the new Audi S4 or tricked out new Superb . But now the reality kicks in.:P

I've settled with my 50kW. I'll be saving for new car, hopefully for something with a bit moar oomph! I'm happy with it's performance while commuting between school-home-hookers-pub :)

Btw, my Fabia is the big one: Combi. Looks are a bit blob-ish but you have no idea how much beer I can stuff in my trunk :D
