Hi, i have Skoda Octaivia 1.9 SDI, the window wipers hardly work. When i turn them on they sometimes work or jerk. When they are on and i push them they move but keep stopping. i'm told its the wiper motor, but heard its expensive. Any ideas?

Thanks for looking.

Your mechanism has most likely seized, quiet a common problem on the octy mk1.

The motor itself will be ok, depending on how mechanically minded you are you could remove the mechanism, disasemble, lubricate it and put it back together again.

As Mannyo says its the wiper linkage, had mine go in April.

Mine was so badly seized I had to replace it, cost £45ish for the linkage. And it took about 1 1/2 hours to fit, and If I can do it anyone can!

Have a search on here, I have done it and written about it in the past.

Basic steps:

1. Mark positions of the wiper blades on the screen

2. Remove wiper arms (sometimes you need a puller to get them off)

3. Remove the scuttle panel (search on here for best methods of getting this off)

4. Unplug wiring and 3 retaining screws for the linkage

5. Remove circlips from the linkage points where the wiper arms attach.

6. Clean up corrosion and pack with grease.

7. Repeat steps in reverse 5-1 as you put it back together

I cleaned my linkage up 18 months ago, and it has been fine since so definitely worth doing. Mine got so back I needed a lowloaded to get my back home as it was pouring down with rain and then gave up on me, having been a bit juddery before hand.
