De-finning Vrs Airbox

Featured Replies

There's a neat heat wrap sleeve you can get that you lace up like a pair of sneakers. Mate WW generously gave me one as a pressie last August, just haven't been bothered to fit it.

Suspect that the best way is to take off the entire downpipe, as there's a support to the rear of the engine...

Also have a roll of central aircon insulation wrap as well as a roll of ally tape..

Will all have to wait till I'm in a modding mood....

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I have also noticed that I have lost 2mpg and get 48 mpg rather than 50 mpg.

I would be interested to see if anyone who does this gets similar results for comparison?

fair enough youve done 200 miles but give it another 200 miles or even reset the trip and have a look over the next 50 miles as the first 150 miles its learning the change as it will detect the change and will need to adapt.

Wot he said - also you can hasten the adapt by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes....

Did this mod a few days ago. Easy to do bottom half. Much more of a pain to do the top due to far more fins.

Car straight away felt like the turbo spooled up quicker, and engine seems to rev slightly more freely, but car ran rough, ie harder to change gear smoothly, until I reset ecu and drove it around for a bit. Now running really smooth.

Next problem along the line is the trumpet in the box. Being the pd100, the trumpet is now the most restricted part in the intake system. Doesn't run particularly well with it removed. Plenty of power but inconsistent delivery due to turbulent air over the MAF I guess. Anyone found a way around this problem with a pd100???

Did this last weekend (1.4TDI) to the bottom part only of the filter box - well it could do any harm could it?

I thought it made the engine smoother/quieter, but was that just in my mind - no idea. Performance and MPG as good or better. Yesterday SWMBO borrowed my car (whilst I changed the bump stops on hers). When she came back, she said,"What have you done to the car; it's much smoother than it was".

Hmm. It shouldn't work, but everybody cannot be wrong, so what is happening. I've two suggestions, but nothing to back them up:

1. The fins act as small loudspeakers and amplify the vibrations just as aircooled engines sound louder due to the fins around the cylinders.

2. Perhaps linked to 1; the box sets up a standing wave which gives pulses in pressure to the air leaving the filter.

For both, making the box less rigid may help stop the effect.

Anybody got any ideas?
