after the accident they say no. just reading an old thread about someone getting bumped, other guy says he will settle without going through insurance, but later to the date he refuses to sort it, is it a risk worth taking?

NO!

should always get other parties details and insureance specifics just incase.

if they then settle the claim temselves all well and good if not you've got the insurance to fall back on

Absolutely not.

There is no way this can be the better option for you and plenty of ways for it to go wrong.

Always make a claim from their insurance , and confirm that they actually have some while at the roadside.

The police won't attend if it's a damage only accident , but if you phone them up and say that you have just been hit by a Mr X and give them the car details they can and will confirm that they are indeed insured before you leave the scene

Just another vote for absolutely definately positively NO!

Probably as a rough guess, 4 out of 10 people that say that they will settle up without using the insurance will pay up - but do you really feel lucky - I don't think that you should otherwise why would you be in the situation to ask this question? Remember, they might have no insurance, no money or no morals - but "sound really nice".

get photos and their details and insurance details, that way you have pictures of them if you need to go to the old bill and insurance details (if they are not dud) to fall back on. Also try and get their reg run through something like askmid or try the text number on another thread is started http://briskoda.net/general-car-chat/my-text-check/121613/ (cost £3) but could save pounds and hassle at a later date.

... and, if it's really not your fault, the £3 is a reclaimable out of pocket expense anyway.
