idle issues and petrol smell !!

Featured Replies

hallo, i have a couple of issues with my 1995 felicia 1.6 mpi. Firstly it starting hunting on tick-over, revs between 1000 and 2000, also when first starting it the revs went to 3000!! now its ticking over at 1500 rpm.

The other problem is now a smell of petrol which seems to be from the rear of the car,

any ideas people?

thanks.

Could be a leaking fuel line, either the main feed or the return. Hopefully its not the tank thats at fault.

lift up the little circular cover under the back seat and make sure the hoses are tight

i would check your inlet manifold gasket for the idling issues. Worth replacing anyway as they cost buttons and the originals are notoriously s***

Agree with Teflontom to check all pipework for fuel smell.

they don't have a gasket as such, they have 4x rubber o-rings

Is the fuel smell always there, or only when the engine is or has recently been, running?

If it only exists when the engine's running, unless it's a leak in the return line (if applicable), then it's related to your idle speed issues! Which car is it?

Right looks like the petrol leak is sorted, it was the rubber fuel hose from the metal pipes at the bulkhead. Its amazing as i thought it was from the back of the car.

The tickover issue is still there but now its ticking over at 1500 rpm.I have unplugged the sensor that controls the temp guage and it wont run with it disconnected, any other ideas ?

yeah, put it back on, jajaja ;) seriosly, the idle thing, leave the batery disconected fro a couple of hours, that's supposed to reset the cpu, the turn the car on, let sit for a while until hot, check engine speed, now if its high check the idle screw if you loosen the screw and the revs are still high two things could be afecting you, 1st check the accelerator cable, posibly it has tension, 2nd, it's running too rich, tighen the idle mix screw at the bottom, my advice is turn it all the way in and then give it 3 full turns out and then set the idle of you car until 800-850 rpm and if you get to that and is not stable turn the idle mix screw ½ turn loose....

but please, check the accelerator cable first and try to reset the cpu before anything

hope it helps, if not, let us know

the fuel injected models are not adjustable in this way, they don't have idle speed/mxture screws like carb engines have, the idling speed and fuel mixture is controlled by the ecu

Thanks for the update TeflonTom, since is a 95 i thought i was a carb dint read the mpi (multi point injectors) my bad,

mr Shiftter, check the accelerator cable, see if it has slack witch it should if not, loosen the cable there should be and adjuster at the end of it
