Steering rack re-adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi Briskodians!

I'd like to have some of your lights on this one, as I never had this "problem".

It works correctly, but it's more... aesthetically speaking.

When I drive the car on a straight road, my steering wheel is a bit rotated.

My question is: Should I wait to change the front tyres, the guys will re-adjust it..? Or can I do it myself..?

Thanks in advance! ;)

That wont be adjusted with a tyre change, mine was a mile out on the favorit untill I had the tracking done and they set the tracking while the steering wheel is straight.

If its too far out I guess you could take the steering wheel off and bolt in back on straighter?

Entirely correct Chris; the only ways to adjust the straight ahead position of the steering wheel are to remove and re-centre the wheel, or wind both track-rod ends the same way to pull the wheel over from that end, and I'd not recommend that!

Wehey I must have listened to somone saying something then once upon a time :)

Thanks guys, I'll give it a look this WE!

It will need a big spanner, typically something like about 25mm AF, for the securing nut.

First get the road wheels pointing straight ahead.

Now, assuming you have the right size spanner, loosen but do not remove the nut.

Bang the steering wheel towards you at the end of each spoke until it comes loose with a crack and a bang. Don't worry about that; it's on a taper splined joint and that's pretty much what's supposed to happen. Now undo the nut properly, and turn the wheel until it's as near straight as it will go. Finish up by re-tightening the nut and make sure the wheel goes fully home on the splines.

But why is the wheel on the p***? Could be the tracking's out - tracking check costs next to nothing (literally nothing at some places) and if you're really cunning you can do it yourself. I'd want to have a look at least.
