Hand-Brake Turns!!!

Featured Replies

Hello, im 14 and i just recently got a 1997 Skoda Felicia 1.3MPI for scudding about in the fields. its very good condition considering it cost £70!!!

i love doing stuff in my car like wheelspins and skids and stuff in the fields, but ive never tried Hand-Brake Turns incase it wrecks my handbrake!!! will doing handbrake turns wreck it or will it keep working???

If you're going to be using the car for autotesting and lots of hand brake turns etc then I'd advise you look in to fitting a "hydraulic handbrake" - it'll be a nice little project for you and will remove the relatively stretchy steel cable that connects the handbrake to the rear brakes.

I'd also suggest that you ensure that the handbrake is properly adjusted before you even try - quite often the handbrake won't grip the rear wheels strong enough to lock them up on the move :)

Additionally, when first doing handbrake turns in fields take it steady for the first few times - it's easier than you think to put the car on it's side :D

You might stretch or snap the cable if you're over-enthusiastic, but it's hardly expensive.

And doiong handbrake turns can put a lot of lateral force on the rear wheels as you are basically pushing sideways on them as the car slides - something that the suspension isn't designed for.

If you hit something sideways on then you could find yourself with lots of damage.

Indeed, I remember (a long time ago I hasten to add) doing the very same thing in a friends mahoosive garden in a Hilman Imp .......................... ah the memories!

As long as you take it easy you should be OK and dont do what we did and hit the brakes too late and go careering through the fence into an adjacent woodland and hitting a tree :o

Can you do donuts?

I remember a freind of mine showing off one night in a feild in his new xr3i, did a handbrake turn next to a telegraph pole, the pole had a high tension steel cable supporting it, the xr3 had no front end :rofl:

I've yanked the handbrake only in a carpark corner when it snowed though at least then you're in open ground with no-one/thing to hit plus its's not so hard on the tyres.

I want to try the infamous J-Turn.

careful of roll overs on a field!

you really need something rwd for some drifting fun!

If you fit a hydraulic handbrake it may be worth fitting an adjustable valve as sometimes you can blow the **** out the seals on the rear brakes.

We discovered this mid stage heading towards a wall - exciting isn't the word.

i can do J-turns but iv never tried a hand-brake turn, and i always wear a seatbelt(unless im in my Suzuki SJ, cos it dont hav any!!)

very jealous of you! always wanted a field. perhaps will look into buying one lol. hydraulic handbrake would be a good idea. but if your gonna be braying the knackers off the car then cant really see the point! just have fun with it and be careful! first time i ever put a handbrake on i ended up tearing a tyre wall by hitting a stone

Ohh brining back the memories when i was 14 and had a 1.1 fiesta in a field!

its not our fields, its the farmers about a mile away!!!

Hope they don't have a shotgun :D

Hope they don't have a shotgun :D

got shot with a salt gun (correct me if im wrong?) afew years back after been caught in a farmers orchard. stung like crap but did the job, never went back lol

Wish I had a field to play with when I was 14. Oh well made up for it later on in life ;)

Right carry a decent amount of speed into a corner, while turning pullthe handbrake hard and dip the clutch. Give it some revs, release the handbrake and drop the clutch. :D

from what i remember floor it give it a slight left flick then immediate hard right turn pulling up handbrake and pushing clutch in all at the same time. as you spin round slam it into first gear and once turned drop clutch and handbrake and off you go to perform it again.

Not too kind to the tyres though :D

i wouldnt know with this car, but rear wheel drives are fun on slippery surfaces, esp with help from diesel on the tyres ;)

I've only ever done this once in my old polo mkII.

It had snowed and then iced up in a car-park so I got out... checked for kirbs that I couldn't see and any other obstacles and then off I went... was rather fun... If a bit chavvy! lol
