Average mpg display

Featured Replies

Just how inaccurate are the average mpg display settings? I hope they are as wildly inaccurate as they seem because otherwise I am getting through a hell of a lot of fuel.

I have had my 1.4 (80) a year this weekend and prior to getting it serviced at 9k (Aug), I was averaging 57mpg. I reset it and I am now only averaging 53.4, my driving style has not changed. On my daily run to work (about 7 miles) I could get 58-60, now it's showing 53 at best.

I now think that the MPG readings are not that acurate, unless they were not before the service and they are now. Has anybody else noticed this?

Trip computers give a rough idea - no better than that.

To get accurate figures use the brim-to -brim method over a few thousand miles.

My computer is consistently optimistic by around 2-3mpg compared to the brim-to-brim figures

SWMBO's car is around 5-6mpg optimistic.

Mine is about 5 mpg optimistic, only filled it twice so far though lol so time will tell.

What engine size do you have & petrol or diesel?...and what figures are you getting?;)

The average mpg on my petrol Fabia is about right, compared to a brim to brim, on the 2 setting. The 1 setting can be optimistic.

My first tank I hadn't reset the comp cos I hadn't read up how to. I reset the trip (2) readout when I filled my tank again. My second tank returned 52.99 brim to brim and the comp (2) said 53.2. I was expecting a big gap after reading posts on here, but mine got it almost spot on. I'll update again upon my neft fill up!

Effect of recent colder weather?

Effect of recent colder weather?

I am in Scotland at the moment and I am struggling to get into high 40's. I presume it is a combination the cold weather, fully loaded car, hills to climb and also headlights and the heater on which will consume fuel.

I have a fabia 2 1.6 16v petrol. I am getting between 23 and 40 mpg. Pretty scary huh?

That is way too low. I am sure you have things under control, but here are a few lesser known 'economy hints' that may give you an extra MPG or two.

When driving on the open road, slowly let the accelerator pedal rise until the speed just starts to ebb, and then press just a tiny bit more. It seems that the Fabia's can use more fuel but not actually go faster for some reason.

When climbing a long hill, don't try to maintain speed even though you are tempted. On long uphill dual carriageways letting the speed fall to 55 is no discrase and you will halve your fuel consumption as opposed to holding 70.

Lift off the gas in good time so as to avaoid braking as much as possible.

When accelerating from rest, take your time and press lightly.

Turn off gadgets when not needed - they use a lot of fuel. 13 Amp screen demist means 13x12 = 150 watts:eek:.

Hope these help a little.

If you reset the mpg to zero then on the first run surely setting 1 & 2 should read the same. Mine doesn't,what is the reason?

Judging from my experience, my Audi A4 (2006) shows around 0.3l/100km more than I'm actually using. And I eeeeeeeasily do 60mpg highway driving...

Mine is 3.77mpg out so far brim to brim, only 3 tanks so far though

Was that 3.77 or 37.7? You're in trouble with 3.77, mate. I'd commit suicide if my car done 3,77.

No, the indicated (trip computer) figure is 3.77mpg more optimistic than the real (brim to brim) figure. Did you really think i was getting 3.77mpg when my mpg is clearly highlighted below in a pretty clicky picture.

Oh, got it. Didn't get your post right the first time. :-)

Mine is about 10% optimistic. Doesn't seem to matter what type of driving I do.

Last tank which was only round town showed 48.2mpg on the trip and brim to brim worked out at 44.5mpg.

Previously, I've done 80% long distance on a tank, it showed about 63mpg and brim to brim was about 57.

Would be nice if it was accurate but I haven't seen a car with one that is yet!

Just consider the MPG computer as being like a politician, likely to lie and always to the detriment of the end user :D My politician in the VRs says 57.9 MPG average, but it's more like 50 MPG. Could be due to giving it some beans though.

You might have noticed quite a few members who have their mpg in their sig..... Like myself. :)

This is done through a website which gives you exact figures on your mpg. All you need to do is register, (it's free), and then enter the amount of fuel along with trip reading / mileage and it gives you your cars average mpg along with other info like running costs etc.......

It's a very handy website and even shows that my dragon box equipped vRS actually has a better mpg than our standard vRS....

Anyhows here's a link.....

I seem to be in the minority here. My mpg display is fairly accurate and was actually pessimistic by about 1 mpg on the two occasions I have checked it. This on A 1.4 tdi engine.

I too have the 1.4 tdi 80 (estate) and on my last tank the comp was only 0.3mpg out at 56.6 / 56.9

Lots of people (like me) have signatures switched off because it consumes screen space and breaks up the readability of the posts.

Never realised you could do that. :)

Oooohh well have a look at the site anyway it really is useful especially when you've got a good run of figures put in there..... I've got over 20 fuelings on my car so far so am starting to get some good info out of the site now. I realised last week how much the fuel rises earlier this year were really costing me. I filled up with a litre more than an occasion in June this year but paid £13 less!!!!:eek::eek:

This tip doesn't just work on Skodas, but IME it works better on carburettor engines than on fuel injection (petrol or diesel).
