Ordered Sky HD

Featured Replies

Took about an hour on the phone as I ordered Sky Talk and BB also, got to the end of the conversation and she told me that they would be able to install it on the 21st (pause) thought that's a while away but ok (unpause) of December!

I guess everyone is taking advantage of the £75 box and £35 install.

Bloomin' heck! That's an impressive leadtime....

I'm sure it will be worth it though, in time for all that Crimbo telly :D

Yep, she did say before she told me the date i'd have it installed in time for christmas, I thought she was taking the p!ss! :D

Bah ive just had poxy old Sky+ installed and it only took a week

I've just uninstalled sky HD took 5 minutes :D

I ordered Sky HD on Sunday. My install date is the 16th November.:P

One small caveat is that the HD box must have component outputs as I have no HDMI input on my Plasma.

They have been told, so what do you reckon the chances of them getting it right are?

There are rumours on sites like digital spy that sky will be scrapping their £10 a month HD charge early next year.

Fingers crossed

If Freesat HD and so on pick up loads of subscribers I can definately see that happening.

Got my MAC code from Pipex tonight, they offered me 8mb, Unlimited DL on a month by month rolling contract for £7.99 pm to stay, was slightly tempted but they've been ripping me off for months with charges for exceeding DL caps etc so asked very politely for my MAC code :)

I wouldnt bother with plus net when you change then

Im sick of them and their cap policy

Trouble is that i am tied into a contract with them due to getting my home phone/internet bundle provided by them

On the plus side of plus net

The service is reliable

and

The customer service dept is top notch

Some areas have been overwhelmed by demand for HD since the reduced price box offer, hence the long lead time on some but not others.

If you have an install date of Novemeber then you will probably be getting one of the old Thomson boxes which has Component out anyway...... You do realise though that all the new Sky HD boxes are HDMI only so the only way to get SkyHD with component is to have one of the old dodgy Thomson boxes...... Which would mean the box you get will more than likely be a re-conditioned example.

To be honest i've been reading on AVForums that people have been getting calls from sky advising them that if they still want installation in November they will have to have a re-conditioned Thomson box with a 2 year warranty and some refund.... £30 i think.... or wait till December / January for a new Pace/Samsung box.

Wouldn't touch one of the Thomson boxes with a very long barge poll myself. I've just been to my local satalite shop today to order Sky HD as i wanted to request a specific box and not get a Thomson..... Originally they took my order then called me back an hour later to say they would only have Thomson boxes in stock for quite a while so i cancelled and will look at upgrading in the new year..... Unless a box comes along at the right price on ebay. ;)

Looks as though as well as high demand the shortage of boxes is also partly down to a lot of Samsungs being returned as faulty when in fact the 'fault' was a new design feature!!!!!

Dave.

I understand what you are saying Dave but I will live with that as it is cheaper than changing the Plasma.

Might be worth pushing for a discount though as what you are requesting is to not receive a brand new box but a re-conditoned one...... As i said some people have been receiving a money back for accepting the re-con boxes.

Or there's always an HDMI -> component converter.

Nope, the last of the Thomson range do not have component output. If you have just had an install and got a thomson with component then its very old stock, or possibly a refurb unit. Thomson are still making HD boxes and the current Thomson, Samsung and Pace do not have any component connections only HDMI and scart for your VCR/DVDR.

Sky have been installing pace/samsung for a few weeks now and both of these have software issues currently. Have a read over on AVForums and see the lockups and lip sync issues affecting both of these.

Just searched for HDMI to component converters and that is a bit of a non-starter.

As HDMI has HDCP and component doesn't there aren't too many companies that make these plus it would be quite expensive.

We will see what they turn up with.

Then you'll be using co-ax then surely?

They must have HDMI and co-ax.

Yeah they have HDMI and RF out now as well as scart of course...... Here's a pic of the back of one of the new HD boxes.

One question I have, is why Sky boxes have USB & Ethernet. For diags?

'future use' is what the official term is....... Although my bluray player has ethernet and USB inputs and both are actually used in everyday use so you never know.

It would defeat the object of getting a Sky HD box if I was going to use Scart.

May as well just buy a new telly then Ian

First on the shopping list is a car. What are you like?:)

Sister's father-in-law ordered Friday night, and was installed this morning.

That's lovely to hear :finger::D

I must live in an absolute tight **** area where we all held off for the boxes to become dirt cheap.:)

Gone down the Panasonic-plasma-with-built-in-Freesat route for the time being. Already got Sky+ so I want to sample the free HD stuff beforehand.

TBH I would only ever watch BBC HD and Discovery/Nat Geo HD really so can't justify SkyHD for the moment.
