Mk1 VRS estate tyre recommendations?

Featured Replies

Right, scraped through my MOT but a major advisory was tyres (which I knew already).

Current tyres are Bridgestone Turanza - decent enough, not exactly mind-blowing though.

I was thinking of going with EVO's recommended tyre, the Goodyear Eagle F1 - but they apparently have a fairly high wear rate.

I'm after something that will give decent grip for hooning, but not something that'll be dead after 5000 miles. I don't do track work, just quick road driving. Good wet performance would be a plus, as I often head to Wales.;)

Alternatives are Toyo Proxes, Conti Sport Contact, Pirelli P6000, Potenzas or to just stick with the Turanzas.

EVO also recommendeds the Vredestein Sessanta, but I haven't found anywhere that sells them.

I really don't want to go budget, so Falkens, Hankook etc are out.

So - thoughts, anyone?

I've got Falken 452's on my hatch, and I would rate them :)

I got Avon ZZ3's on my VRS Hatch and there the best yet with good grip and dont wear out too quick, last ones I had were bridgestones and they didnt last too long. I paid 360 delivered for 5 but they're 18" cos I replaced the 17's. Cost £40 to have the 5 fitted at KwiK Fit.

The P6000s last forever, but prefer the Contis and Potenzas for grip/performance, and they last pretty well too. Like Proxes too, but the ones I've had have worn fairly quickly.

I have Falken 452s on my TDi. Used to have p6000s on my 306HDi, I found that they used to wear quite quickly. 452s give me at least 30k on the front, and probably double on the back. Falkens have their prices frozen this year, so that is why they might seem to be cheaper.

BF Goodrich g profile on mine and would recomend them, had 2 sets , quiet , very good in wet , wear about 35K MILES I PAID £ 75 eachj fitted , next set i am going to try the Verdistran sportrak , had a number of recomendations and also rated highly on the Auto Express Tyre Test for the last 2 years , have alook on the A E website .

Thanks all, some food for thought.

Proxes on an Elegance 110 estate. I'm a quick driver, and saw 16_000 out of fronts (maybe 3_000 of that motorway, but usually seen at 70 mph); rears are about half-worn!!

I've got a P6000 on the back and it looks like it's been on there for donkeys years. It was on the car when I got it and looked old and perished then... it has done 13,000 miles since! There's about 2.5mm left on it now, as with the other rear which is a Pirelli something-or-the-other, so they will be getting changed before xmas. I'm thinking of Falken 452s because they're cheap but still good, ideally I'd go for Kumho KU31s or Toyos but will probably put those on the front when the time comes to change the front ones.

Camskill's do the Toyo T1r in 225/45/17 for £76 delivered, so no real excuse to buy cheap tyres, is there?

just got 4 x kumo's £240 deliverd.. :thumbup::D 225/45/17

p.s hope thats good

I only need 2 back ones and they're 205/50/17 at the moment so would either have to get them in that size or get a whole set of four :(

Plus is that price including fitting, valve and old tyre disposal? Because I can get Kumho KU31's from event tyres for £87 each including mobile fitting... if I went for the Toyos I'd be looking at another £20 or more for a tyre place to fit and balance them?

That sounds like a bl**dy good deal but I'm guessing you live up north somewhere? They all seem to be about £20 more expensive down here

That was my experience of checking on-line prices; they look cheap until you see that you need to add another 15 or 25 quid a corner for delivery, fitting etc.

I've got kumos on my fabia and octavia vrs can't fault them give em a go!!!!

My local tyre place will fit and balance for £10, and that includes them getting rid of the old tyre, but having worked in waste management recently, I have several places to get rid of tyres for free, and no, its not dumping them down a dark lane....LOL

Camskill include delivery in the price of £76 for a 225/45/17 Toyo T1-r.

Problem is that we all have our own personal preference when it comes to tyres, their qualities and performance, but knowing they are the only thing that keeps you on the road, should help when making the choice.

Planning on a race track life? If not, the cheapest branded mid range tyres blackcircles.co.uk can get you.

I paid £28 each all in for my 16". All weather driving, still no issues, still gripping great.

Thanks that would be great, everywhere I've looked at around here is silly prices, even these order-it-online-and-get-it-fitted places. £240 for four sounded like a real bargain!

No, no track days or owt, but given the speeds the car can get up to pretty easily, I would rather go with a reputable brand than go for the cheapest available.

I don't think I could trust a tyre that cost £28 - that's cheaper than the rubber on my mountain bike!

You'd think the location of "Sevenoaks, Kent" would be a clue, wouldn't you? I mean, I'm a Scot and still figured out you're in the SE (although I did once work not many miles from Sevenoaks).

Sorry, that was my bad, I was trying to quote Westallc there and it came out looking like I'd said that!

But yeah I guess we're both in the Southeast. :)

I got 4 Kumo KU31's, fitted balanced etc for £55 each, but that up North.

Nice tire too, quiet, grip well in wet and dry (though I dont go daft, usually have the baby on board), wear seems o be good so far too, though only about 4000 miles old.

A lot of people think that. They grip better than the worn out premium brands that were on there, don't do anything wrong in the wet and are tested and rated to 150mph. As the speed limit is 70 and my 1.8T can't do a genuine 150 anyhow, £28 did it for me......

One way to look at it is to say, if it makes a difference, get in a taxi and then guess the tyres it has. Or drive a few cars and name the tyres make/model. If you can't tell a difference from behind the wheel, is there much of a difference? Bought a new car with tyres on it that you didn't recognise the brand, but didn't change them till they were worn out? Often the time tyres get important is when choosing them, yet you don't use them when choosing them you use them when driving them - which is when little seems to differenciate the majority. Now I know on limit performance and wear come into it, but it's an interesting devil's advocate point of view to take.

Greg.
