Something to stop rear disks rusting?

Featured Replies

Last car I had with rear disks had seperate drum for handbrake - is the rear of hi spec fabias different ? Normal braking kept the rust off ,and it was suggested that the application of the handbrake whilst at afew MPH would clean up the drums . Indeed at over 100K ,my rear shoes were still origonals ,and the disks - rust free --so what'sgoing wrong /

Well what's going slightly wrong is "progress", since rear discs callipers complete with handbrake function came on the market, the old disc with a small drum inside has been priced out of existance. I think that more the point is that small cars end up getting rear brake kits that are "too big" for them and they tend to get underworked. My wife's Polo is used on hilly roads on her commute so the rear discs are okay at 6 years and 45K miles, but I can see that if the cars are used mainly in town and on the level then there does seem to be a problem with underuse leading to permanent rusting of the swept faces.

I have found that the odd handbrake turn keeps mine clean!!! Well I have driven rally cars for 20 years!!!
