Remote Control Light Switch

Featured Replies

Hi.

Could anyone recommend somewhere to get hold of a remote control light switch? I've done some searching but can only find a dodgy looking one from Maplins or ones that also act as dimmer switches - which I don't want or need.

Ideally I'd prefer it to be under about £20. I'd rather it was a replacement switch plate with a little remote unit. Although I have found something consisting of a bayonet fitting and an additional wireless switch for £17 that might suffice.

Its for the child's room so that she can turn the light off from her bed - as she needs to navigate some steps upto it.

Cheers, Luke.

I've had some good ones from B&Q before, no problems.

It's listed as having dimmer function though - can it be on/off only? ...and you have to buy the remote seperately, right?

MK are just bringing out a remote (just stick it any where ) switch....all it needs is the master unit behind the light and you can have as many remotes for that light as you want.

Yes you can have straight on and off and the remote is seperate.

I've heard of that 'En Ocean' technology before... at my old work! :) ...although, we didn't do lighting.

as far as i've seen all remote dimmers do on/off as well as being dimmable :)

a mate at work told me about those new mk switches a few weeks ago, the uses are almost endless, excellent.

no more unreliable PIR's for your garden lights when you arrive home at night, have a light switch in the car :D

garden lights can be turned on and off without wiring too, awesome idea

I've got a B&Q one controlled from a spare button on the remote control.

You press to swap between on/off and it remembers where the light was when it was last on, eg 50% brightness etc.

You then press and hold to make it go through the dimmer settings up and down.

I think it's great.

But most of the light-switch-replacement ones will work poorly if at all with fluorescent lamps - there's normally no neutral at the switch so they rely on passing a small current through the lamp all the time to power the electronics.

As the device needs a filament lamp, most manufacturers choose to offer dimming into the package as well.

thats because flourescent lamps aren't dimmable.

Not technically true, generally they are not but there are dimmable fluorescent tubes which require special ballasts and switchgear. They are being fitted to most of the new NHS wards that I have seen.

Yeah, I was just pointing out that if the OP was expecting to be able to use one of these switches on a CF lamp (I can't think of any other reason not to want a dimmer!) he was going to be out of luck...
