Possible "Easter Egg" in Superb Climatronic

Featured Replies

Could be old news but I was reading about this the other day on some obsure Eastern European / German forum.

The Superb came with a Climatronic unit that beeps when you press the buttons.

Apparently the feature can be turned on or off by pressing and holding the "ECON" and "WINDSREEN DEMISTER" buttons together for a couple of seconds.

Unfortunately the unit only works in cars with the CANBUS control of the climatronic (late passtas etc) as well...otherwise I'd be all over one of these for my Golf like a pit bull on a poodle.:D

Sounds like a practical feature, as you take your life into your hands trying to operate the Climatronic on the move.

Anyone have one of these units in their Superb?

UM... We all do in the UK. Classic right through to L&K Spec. Everyone I have been in beeps when the buttons are pressed. Maybe a UK default?

My V reg Octavia and 02 1.8T SuperB didnt have this feature but my 54 1.9TDi does have it, thought it might be a bit annoying at first but got used to it now.

I got a bit excited when I read about it.:o

We never had any Skodas at all over here (Australia) until October last year. (if you don't count pre-1968!)

So I am a bit unfamiliar with what was what in the prior models to the current one.

They had lots of good stuff in them compared to a Golf.:)

If you press the cold and hot button at the same time it changes from *c to *f.

Within half an hour of getting my Superb I got rid of the "beep" - infuriating - and also changed the display from deg C to deg F.

The system at default is stupid; 1 deg C is far too large a change in temperature for me as I always wanted finer control. At least 1 deg F steps are nearer the mark. The trouble is then that the numbers are pretty meaningless.

The whole Climatonic thing is a stupid gimmick - designed in a stationary laboratory rather than in a car going along a bumpy road. Adjusting it at night on a bumpy twisting road is downright dangerous. Controls on cars have to be kn0bs that you can get hold of.

It also gets itself into stupid operating modes like running the fan so fast that you have to turn it down manually to get rid of the noise.

The ultimate sin though is that I can't get a really hot blow on my feet when I'm cold and wet and yet have cool air on my face. BMW do it far better.

rotodiesel.

Have to agree with Roto, push buttons are rubbish for ranged controls. For on/off applications they're fine. Far better idea is to use a dial. More tactile, easier to set where you want it and much quicker.

(sorry Roto, just can't bring myself to say "I like kn0bs far better", I've seen before what can happen around here :P).

Have to admit I didn't know you could disable the beep, tried it tonight, works. Will probably turn it back on though so I don't have to keep an eye on the display so much.

Blimey... how often do you need to change the temp. I have mine set to a given temp when I get in the car and it stays like that.

Why the heck do you need to change the temp all the time... espcially when driving down bumpy twisty roads?

The Ibiza Climatronic has knobs for the temp and fan speed, much more intuitive I must admit.

I do like the BMW setup though, ability to have a hot face/cold feet and vice versa is a nice touch. :)

Oh.

When I read "Easter egg" in the title I thought there was going to be a hidden game of Space Invaders or something.

My biggest complaint about the Climatronic is that it does not ventilate the cabin enough when set to Auto, leaving me with a headache after a few hours of driving

Both Octavia's and Superbs Climatronic share this design "feature" .

Perhaps a hint for all those who curse the Climatronic: set the temperature to what you like (I like low 19deg C), switch on demister and foot vents only (so it is not in the "Auto" mode, but press "auto" first to be sure that the AC compressor will come on when required), and set the fan to mid-range (I set to 3-4 bars on the indicator). This addresses most problems listed above, ie I don't have to adjust it constantly, the temperature is still maintained automatically, you get your feet fully ventilated :P, it is not noisy, and the cabin has plenty of oxygen going round.

Note that this has to be done with the engine warm and cabin interior around the desired temperature, otherwise you will notice that your automatic Climatronic unit will quickly automatically change the fan setting

Once set, the fan is adjusted automatically to cold/hot engine and cold/hot cabin conditions, and it works well enough.

I find that these settings leave me in best shape after 12hr+ trips.

I second that. That's exactly how I use it, although I must admit it tends to be on "Econ" towards the end of the month :)

AC does not significantly increase fuel consumption when driving above 120mph. Solution for you: drive fast :P

I blame climatronic for a near spin at the nurburgring!

Was desperately trying to fanny about with the heater to clear the windscreen but not bake me and deafen me at the same time. Was very wet and I had some panting men in the car, so it suddenly steamed up, at the worst moment. There I was franticly stabbing away at the buttons before I reached the next corner!

So the fact that I was distracted, and the fact that I'm a multi tasking moron didn't help. Resulting in a lock-to-lock sideways moment! Luckily saved it due to us all farting so hard mid slide, which counter balanced the slide. Much like a bow thruster on a ship.

Basically, hiding a wall of identical looking/feeling buttons behind the gearstick is a bit annoying! The damn thing is dangerous.

I'll bear that in mind, thanks ;)

For one minute there I thought you'd been around Nurburgring in a Superb:)

Now that would be hairy ;)

Yeah, it took me a couple of reads to realise he was driving an Octy ;)

Still I'll have you know that the Superb is a very keen handling car*.

* Compared to a Lincoln Continental

Hmmmmm maybe I'm foolhardy, perhaps just plain stupid, or ... as I like to think .... the devil's chauffeur. However myself and two mates are hopefully heading over to the Nurburgring next summer. See no reason why my Superb can't give a few Golf GTi's a run for their money.

I will however admit I'm throwing some sticky tyres on it beforehand.

One of the lads has an M3 but is, in all honesty, an appalling driver. I have several bets I can beat any time he puts in.

So having read a few people's reactions about running a Superb on the track I guess I should feel a little daunted.

.... I don't.

I too am feeling a 'ring trip sometime soon. Got to replace the shocks first, and then some new tyres...then maybe a remap...and then face the Mrs :P

Hmm.

I sense a forum trip...

I take it by that you mean the 2.0 8v Mk4 "GTI" right? ;)
