Well it looks like I may be out of luck - those wheels are discontinued :(

Looking around I'm not seeing many I like now. I'm still thinking black though.

Maybe:

I kinda like these, but would prefer them in silver. Maybe I'm just olde-fashioned that way?

Yup; Team Dynamics Pro race 1.2. These are good and they are soooo light. :D:thumbup:

BUT RobClubley is in New Zealand (according to his Avatar) so there might be an availability issue.

I am in NZ which can mean interesting delivery charges :D

Just found this - I don't think it's what I was looking for:

Team Dynamics

:D

I'm leaning towards these in 18" at the moment:

I know!

I need to make a careful approach to mission control to ensure minimal pain after I make the purchase. :D

Do you think the Konigs will be a pig to clean?

What about those black wheels with a green rim on a black octy vrs to match the calipers???????????? No??:thumbdwn:

I prefer the Konigs tbh.. Can't see them being any trickier to clean than your current wheels, definitely easier than the R32 ones thats for sure. :)

The force is strong in that one!

oops... didn't realise that getting hold of those would be difficult on the other side of the planet :P

That last set you posted look ace

MMm, okay it's looking good for the go-ahead on the wheels :)

So will I suffer with the ride and handling on 18s vs 17s?

I'm thinking 18s for looks :D

  • Author

Well I went along to place an order and now they reckon they can only get them in 46 offset even though they are manufactured in 35.

They said for an extra $1000 (400 quid) they can ship some especially.

But another supplier has them in stock in 35 offset. Only they don't do interest free credit like the first and are more expensive adding about $400 to the overall price.

Argh.

And I've also sourced the last set in NZ of the 17s with the red stripe.

So, 17s with tyres $2100

18s with tyres $3100

Big difference!

So will I suffer with the ride and handling on 18s vs 17s?

Rob in all honesty I could not tell the difference between 17's and 18's in terms of the ride quality when I switched mine. Purest's will say it's more crashy over bumps and potholes but IMO that is utter crap and it doesnt suffer at all and we have some terrible road surfaces where I live

17s vs. 18s. - here are my thoughts posted previously on the Octavia II forum, the principals are the same;-

A couple of thoughts for you made with the benefit of having run both 17s and 18s on my vRS; I have a set of both with the 18s currently fitted for 'summer' use and I will be switching to my 17s come 1st October;

1. There are a couple of quite recent threads about tyre pressurse which succinctly conclude that around 2.3 - 2.4 bar front and rear (34 - 36psi IIRC) works best on the vRS. They are higher than OE pressures which gives sharper handling but not at the expense of ride quality.

2. IMHO there IS a notceable different in ride quality with the 18s but I'm willing to trade this off for the sharper turn in (brought about by shorter/stiffer sidewall of the tyres) for dry weather fun.

3. You mention a blunting of response (at low revs). This is most likely due to the 18s being around 2.5kg per wheel/tyre heavier than the 17s (I have weighed mine) and the resulting increase weight increasing the 'rotational mass'. Try spinning a bicycle wheel with a slim racing tyre on and then spin a wheel with a large chunky off-road tyre and you will know what I mean.

4. The 17s IMHO whilst being less sharp on turn in (as mentioned above) give an overall better and more forgiving handling response; particularly in the wet and cold. That's why I keep my 17s for 'winter' use, October to May. Evo magazine in their 2007 tyre test used a Golf GTi as the test car and found that using 18s with 225/40 tyres it was around 2.5 seconds per lap (on a 60 - 65 sec lap) SLOWER around there test track in the wet than with 225/45 17s.

Finally, as a handling tweek for the 'winter' I have just sold my 17 x 7J Pegasus rims and bought a set of Audi S Line 17 x 7.5J rims to spaly the sidewalls of the tyres a fraction and tighten their response, without loosing the flexibility and forgiving nature of the 225/45 17s.

This is the full thread is you want to read it;- http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/17-vs-18-zeniths/119384/

Tyres for the 17's will be cheaper long term...

Get some 8"x17" ET35 wheels, with 225/45R17 tyres. Or, 7"x17" ET38 wheels, with 205/50R17 tyres. Sorted!

You have to buy them now, to push me off the fence! I've been fussing and farting on about new wheels for ages now too.

All of the black wheels you've shown look really nice.

Okay - 17s ordered :D

Okay - 17s ordered :D

well done, but C'mon don't keep a secret. Which ones in the end?

Now you will have to decide which tyres to get? Please do the wheels and your car justice by getting proper performance tyres, Bridgestone/Yokohama/Michelin or similar; not some cheap Korean rubbish that will last less than 5,000 miles and make you feel like you are driving on ice! ;)

I've gone for the original ones I posted with the red rim :)

As for tyres I'm thinking Goodyear Eagle F1s in 225/45/17
