Motorway driving

Had a 700cc marbella as my first motor! £5 lasted me 2 weeks!

Amazes me people doing 56mph. It's not the optimum fuel efficient speed for ALL vehicles.

It was picked as being the 90kph extra-urban s/c limit in some EC nations; nothing to do with economy.

If i'm doing 95 and the rest of the traffic is doing 75-80 you think it's best for me if i'm constantly shifting lanes and hugging the hard shoulder simply because someone in black and white times decided that?

:D

So When and Were was it you were doing 95 ? :rotz:

Once you have answered the above question ,one of the resident police on here can issue a speeding ticket :P.

What are the fine & points for 25 mph over the limit ? :D

"If i'm doing 95" not when

56mph has been banded around as the most economical speed as well.

There's plenty of info on google, and plenty of people that have disproved this advice.

The actual most economical speed varies from car to car and with conditions. Certainly it was not the most economical speed with my Fabia.

You think I didn't know that 56mph is not an economy "magic bullet"? After all, I was able to say why it was chosen.

Come on then Ken why was the 56 mph figure plucked out to be a measurement speed along with 75 mph. Would be interested to know:)

what about people that overtake on the inside :sofahide:

I must admit to doing this in the past when I have been stuck behind ditherers in the outside lane. I hang my head in shame....:o

What really annoys me is trucks who pull out on you with no warning, especially annoying on dual carriage way motorways like the M2 and M26 and also the muppets that cut across from the "fast" lane at the last minute to exit at a junction.

but the car drivers doing 56 are actually doing 53mph and are one of the reasons traffic moves slow on motorways and dual carriage ways as lorries moved out to creep past them.

The most economical speed for petrol cars is between 1500-2000 rpm and diesels iirc is around 2500rpm

Hope that doesn't apply to mine as 2000 rpm in fifth = not much over 40mph  :)

have you checked your car manual as im sure it says something somewhere in them. perhaps manufacturers should put in big writing in the brochure what rev's/speed is the most economical for that vehicle?

so if the most economical speed was 27 mph, would people really drive at that speed on the motorway?

I hate people using their mobile phones when they're on the motorway. Means they're not concentrating on their driving...

I also hate unmarked traffic cars on the motorway...

the car companies all do roughly similar tests including motorway speeds, normally in the tech section of the manual with the mpg figures and at what speed each reading was made at.

I also hate unmarked traffic cars on the motorway...

I love unmarked cars on the Motorway, marked cars makes everyone slam their anchors on and creep past at 71mph. Unmarked ones are more likely to catch bad drivers!

Reason for 56mph already posted!

75mph is 120kph, another speed used by the rest of Europe as a common limit. (but I think 130kph is a more common m/way limit)

Didn't have me specs on, sorry Ken:D. In any case i don't know f anyone doing 90 Km/h extra urban in the parts of Europe I've been to.

I hate people who see police cars slow down to speed back up again.

I was coming home Sunday night from London in a Zafira hire car (CDTI 120PS version)

No cruise control and was coming up at about 80mph in lane 1

Saw in my headlights ahead a marked Cheshire Constabulary Police Volvo.

Now other drivers must have seen this and started moving in and slowing down, except me I just moved into lane 3 without slowing down and cruised past.

My pet hates arrreee -

1. People chainging lanes without checking OR indicating :really:

2. Speedcameras and the obsession that speed causes accidents - argue all you want - if you are on an empty motorway you can be doing twice the legal limit and, as long as you aren't sleeping you can make all the turns and you wont die. If you drive into another car coming the other way and you are both doing 30 mph... be prepared for some pain. (See also: motorway speed limit is too low for modern cars)

3. people with no real concept of lane discipline - in heavy traffic it pays to stick to a lane, for all concerned rather than swapping frequently, if the traffic is flowing, stick to lane 1 or if you really are doing mach10 and are late to meet the queen, lane 2 to get by the lorries more easily, lane 3 is not home. :hbomb:

4. the Middle Lane Residents Society - entirely unacceptable, in all situations :rkick:

5. people who box you in, or overtake you when it is clear that your current course and speed will cause you to plow into the back of something, so you have to drop anchors to avoid pain. Why they dont anticipate and either overtake properly or move to the outside lane, I will never know. This also relates to being boxed in general - I know I get annoyed if I overtake a lorry, pull back to lane 1 then have to wait 10 minutes for a gap in the overtaking traffic untill I can overtake the next lorry. :parhmph:

n.b. the 30 urban limit is fine, as is 20 around schools etc, but 70 is too slow on the motorway I feel, especially considering how many of us daily commuters exceed this, errr daily? :rubchin:

Lesser of two evils really. Last time I did this for someone they didn't pull out and I had some w@nchor in a mondeo sat in the outside lane flash me (and I wasn't doing under 70mph by any means). That has to be a pet hate of mine, those who go sit in the "fast lane" even with nothing in the other 2 lanes, because they're doing 120mph and think they own it. They move straight out to it, then when their exit comes up they cut straight across all the lanes at the last second.

I know... doesn't make it any less infuriating when it happens to you though ;)

Sounds like my average journey to work!

Pet hates:

- Rubberneckers

- People who can't drive in to low sun, try using those flappy things at the top of your windscreen - they can be adjusted you know!

- People who drive past the queuing traffic approaching M6S J2 exit and then drive across the hashed area, over the exit slip and off up the M69.

- People who drive big 4x4s and such like and use them to bully their way around the road (such as the guy driving the Merc ML320 CDi around the traffic island this evening and forcing me to either give way or mount the kerb - tw@!)
