Insurance renewals - they are at it

Featured Replies

Hi, something strange happening with insurance

My policy is up for renewal and had some changes to make so got online quotes from current insurer and off confused last night. Was all set for a big hike given more miles and my first lot of points this year :(

I get follow-up phonecall from insurer today to see if I'm happy and say I'd like to renew at that price (cheaper than last year), so puts me through and renewals people who start by quoting me nearly £600 as I'm doing 20k and have 3 points, basically double the online quote. I gently referred her to the online quote, she popped me on hold and matched all the details. Came back with £291. Job done. Trouble is she had earlier explained the increase as due to points and mileage which they frown upon.

Moral of the story - Points + miles = cheaper insurance.

Hows that work

It's just the game isn't it. If you don't put up a fight, they're happy to maximise their profits at your expense.

It is a bit of a giggle. The entertaining thing is, I got some quotes earlier in the year when I got my points to see the impact and they were more expensive, so had budgeted for a 20% increase, but have ended up with a 25% decrease on last year.

Does anyone think there is a time of year for renewals that's cheaper. Just thinking on a cashflow idea for insurers that there can't be that many other muppets that have their insurance renewal at xmas.

Happy days

They've done the same to me every year I've had a car.

Even if my renewal was ever cheaper I'd still shop around, they're never going to give the best quote first time.

I did! :P I spent years ringing round for quotes in the week before Christmas - renewal date was 28th December

Thankfully I get to avoid that now, but still have to help SWMBO with hers, which is July.

I'm just about to renew mine and was quoted £603, so after telling them where to stuff it they manage to bring it down to £470. Firstly that's still too high, but secondly, every time they reduce the price makes me more angry that they didn't give me that one to start with. Talk about valuing your customers - it grated even more because I had to sit throug the guy reminding me how great they were as he was working it out.

Not as bad as one other company though, who wanted £640 and expected me to pay a £600 compulsory excess, and £350 voluntary on top of that. The worst one I've had so far though was just over £1200...

Have to say I am well chuffed to get it under £300, and now I think about it perhaps its a fair price given they didn't give me very much much back for downsizing from the v6 to the 1.9tdi earlier in the year.

The mileage didn't seem to make as much difference as I thought. About £40 per 10,000 it appears.
