play dvd's on g3 iMac

Featured Replies

I was given an old g3 imac (CRT blue/white thing) and am intending on letting my son have it in his room.

It only had a cd rom in so i got a dvd-rom and put that in it.

It is running OSX 10.3.9

I am having trouble getting it to play dvd's. They are recognised and i can browse the file structure etc of the disc but even when i installed VLC to try to play them i get nothing happening.

I did try to install the OSX 10.4 that came with my intel imac but it was not having any of it. lol

Any suggestions???

Thanks

Have you tried connecting it to the net and running software update?

Have you tried using iDvd?

No, not yet. It is upstairs in the sons room and is not connected to the net yet.

iDvd should play them anyway, but a software update can't hurt.

Was it a fresh install of OSX?

I got it from a school that i did some work for, they were throwing it out.

It still has the osx 10.3.9 that they were using. Ideally i would have liked to format it and install OSX fresh so i can configure it myself but the OSX disks that came with my intel based iMac dont seem to work?

I should have a 10.3 or a 10.4 dvd that should work. :)

It did not come with any disks at all.

I am guessing that i can't use the disks from my mac due to them beeing for intel based macs?

No idea on the Intel front.. but I should be able to sort you out with a 10.3 disc for your power based mac. :)

cheers that would be great? How much do you want for the disk?

from what i can see, theres no dvd player or idvd software installed anywhere on this g3. I am typing this on it now though. Just connected it to the net to do a software update but there was not much to install, just a security update.

Also it is making a buzzing sound all the time. From reading on the net it sounds like it may be expensive to cure it so my son will just have to live with it i guess.- EDIT: after further investigation it seems like its the hard drive making a noise. I am going to get another one and put that in too.

Your CRT iMac will run 10.4 but not 10.5. You won't be able to install 10.4 using the discs from your other iMac as the discs which come with each Mac are specific to that model. If you can get hold of a standard 10.4 disc though it should install OK.

Having said all that 10.3.9 is very stable & if you're only going to be playing DVD's I'd stick with that.

The DVD player software application is called 'DVD player' (:)).

A good place to look/ask questions: Forum : Using DVDs and CDs with your iMac (CRT)

AFAIK iDVD is for making DVD's rather than watching them.
