Short shift

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if there is a short shift kit available for the RS?

I don't

...but i'd be interested to find out!

Well there are a few for the mk IV Golf's and TT's....I'll ask!

Or cut the shaft down, which will give a shorter throw.

(I used to laugh at this idea till I drove someone's saxo (with the same box as mine) that had done this by a few cm - it felt surprisingly better!!)

Or just hold the gear stick lower down when you change gear... :D

Wouldn't you need an arm extension for that. :D

A friend somehow without me noticing was gradually unscrewing my gear stick knob (how do you say that without risking a flood of replies), well anyway he evetunally removed it while I was on a roundabout. Of course I go to grab the gearstick but it was gone, or rather an inch lower, completly missed it. But the subsquent chane did feel quite "quick". So the saw a bit off logic does work, albeit not with my knob thankyou...

You just attach a monkey wrench to it just at the top of

the gaiter, then you can change gear with that... :D

Or move your seat forward a notch...

re holding the shaft lower (oo er) I do that, hook my fingers around the shaft lower for shifts, does feel nicer.

Look, just don't take that out of context ok!! :D

:smile-l:

I reckon this thread was started just for the knob gags... :D

oooh, Matron :D

Don't know if you want to hear this but AmD do one.

How much does it cost and is it for a Skoda and not a hybrid?

I am pretty sure that one of the many firms in our webs links does one, but I haven't been able to track it down just yet. But in the meantime how about a sequential gearshift from TSR Performance instead? :D

PS Just noticed it is for late cable change gearboxes....and the gear lever looks about 6' long!

The tranny on my Octavia Elegance is the same as on a GTI (O2J). I don't know from 1st hand experience, but you could try the ecstuning.com short shifters. However, rumor has it that the synchros are not the sturdiest on our trannies. A short shifter will ask more from the synchros. Also, US prices are way cheaper than European prices.

If this helps... (avoiding ALL puns Frankie Howard)

I "dremmeled" about an inch of my stick when I fitted my aftermarket gearknob (took the stick down to the bit where it flares out).

I found that it got rid of a lot of the standard VAG notchiness and shaved nanoseconds off my shift times (what I am trying to say is that it feels much much better).

No regrets, I'd recommend it to anyone who isn't nervous about having a mint OE car to trade in to a main dealer in 1 / 2 / 3 years time

Living up to my signature now hey  ???

I heard that short shifters may lower the lifetime of the synchros. The synchros are supposedly the easiest part to wear down in the tranny, as far as I've heard. I'm sure the TT part would work, or other GTI parts, the trannies are identical, they're so called O2J trannies.
