Does anyone know if the Octy 2.0 TDI's have an aux heater in the same way that the Passat with that engine can?

I ask because if it does then you can convert it to provide additional pre-heater capability for not much cash. Otherwise a pre-heater is out of the call at £1100 fitted :eek:

You could be right but I see it's an option for the facelift Octy in the German options list (assuming that's what is meant by Booth heating).

It is included in the extra options list here in Bulgaria.

And the price is near one you mentioned (about 1200 Euro).

If you are talking about the electric heater, it is present with all diesel engines.

I'm pretty sure there is a dealer Webasto kit.

Auxillary heating is a royal pain in the butt imho.

Only fitted in the UK to larger passenger vehicles like the Sharan and Touran etc.

Why do you say it's a pain ross?

I was thinking it was good to have the engine warmed up on a cold day to reduce wear, reduce fuel useage (offset by the fuel burned) and also defrost/demist the car.

Whats a PTG element and does my Octy 2 TDI VRS have one ?

The auxilary heater as fitted to VAG cars is a little diesel burner that warms up the coolant quicker on a diesel engine (doesnt warm it up ahead of starting the car up).

They are a pain for a few reasons, mainly on the Touran the location of the unit in the o/s of the front bumper means all the extra coolant pipes run down accross the cranshaft pulley, right PITA when you do a cambelt. Also they smoke, they dont work for most of the year, then when they do customers complain of smoke coming out of the middle of the vehicle (thats where they exhaust) and a smell of diesel.

It's a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) resistor element actually. It should be a standard equipment in all diesel engines and according to VWvortex forums, it should be installed in gasoline engines also. It's just been disabled and can be activated with vag-com.

It's an electric heating element installed in air conduict and it provides warm air almost immediately after car has started. Very handy during cold season.

Not all of our cars have an additional heating elements, none have a PTC in any air conduits for the UK market, its not considered cold enough.

I thought this might be the case as my wife s freelander has a "PTC" heater and demists instantly - magic . The Octy is rather disappointing in this respect though. Cost cutting I guess - though id have thought the UK is just right for a PTC on account of the high humidity. Really cold places have quite dry air.

Ive started putting the car in the garage now so I dont have to wait for it to demist in the morning. First car in the garage for about 10 years !

The PTC element doesn't heat up the engine only the incoming air. Webasto or Eber fuel burning auxiliary heaters warm the engine as well. But these heaters are extra options and they're not available in every country.

hmm i wonder if the PTC element can be retrofitted

My correspondence with peeps on other VAG forums tends to indicate that UK Audi and Golfs do have them and thus does raise the possibility of retro fitting. Im looking into it but what I need is a part number for the VAG PTC heater element. Can anyone help with this ??

A part number for an electric Aux air heater in the phaeton is: 3D0 959 984 if thats any use.

I looked into this for the Fabia and the cost was just too much to justify for the few months absolute tops it would be needed. Shame though, nice idea in principle.

Thanks Weibo, I agree £1000+ for 3-4 months maximum where it is really (for the UK) cold just doesn't seem worth it.

The issue isn't really just the cold, it is the misting up and condensation. Driving on narrow lanes at 6 in the morning with poor visibility through the windscreen is not my idea of fun.

As to the cost I though it was the Webasto heater that was around £1k not the PTC heater?

Just browsing the current brochure, and I note the Diesel Auxiliary Heater is now an option on Uk Cars. £1000. Bit out of my price range.
