Dealer Bhp upgrade on Octy vRS

Featured Replies

My Octavia vRS has done nearly 2000 miles so is about run in and I was thinking of getting it chipped. When I purchased the car the dealer told me that he could sell me a chip that would up Bhp to 226. The unit plugs into a plug under the steering wheel and you can alter the car between standard and uprated, once the settings have been altered it is removed. He said that it would not affect my warranty etc. Has anyone come accross these before and if so are they any good. The unit cost about

I think you will find it is RevoTechnik, if you do a search there is a rolling road day at JBS on 29/08.....one of the Midlands Revo dealers and the upgrade rich1068 has been going on about!!!! I too will join the club....one day!!! :D

Yep that looks like the one, just been on the Revo web site and the box looks the same. The dealer is claiming 226bhp and Revo claim 218bhp!!

Presumably it will affect your insurance. I too am thinkin of getting a remap.

Is this chip detectable by the insurance vultures ?

The dealer is lying.. it may not affect your warranty "with the dealer" but it will affect your warranty "with skoda" which is who pays for it.

If your dealer goes bust' date=' service manager changes, you may find yourself with no warranty.

It's your risk......[/quote']

Good point, I suppose it will still be detectable even when turned back to standard..... will talk to th edealer on this and ask the question.....as far as insurance goes the sensible thing would be to tell your insurance company but I suppose you could but it back to standard and hope for the best... :thumbdwn:

It may affect your insurance - depends who you're insured with. Either way, you have to tell them, otherwise you run the risk of having your insurance declared void.

If they ever have the need to investigate a case that deeply then they will be able to find if you've had it done - even if the ECU changes were undetectable, there would be a significant paper trail from you having the work done...

Rob.

And don't forget, you or your car might be in a state where you are not able to access it anymore to undo the chip/box/remap. Insurance companies are the 20th century maffia... they will find out.

It is detectable, even in standard mode. Not necessarily by the dealer themselves, but if you have a warranty claim HQ may ask for the car or ECU to be sent for 'data retrieval and fault finding', and they can see it!!!!

Now that you've posted it on here everyone knows about it. You would be surprised who is looking in, Skoda UK etc. Have a look in Who's on line.

 Des.

K44 ENT,

Almost certain it's Revo. Dealers in my area offer it. Their code is on your ECU and the various SPS units turn it on or off plus other bells and whistles. I wouldn't believe all that about it not affecting your warranty though. They're car dealers after all ie their lips move :D As Ian said, your dealer at the moment may turn a blind eye but... :( The differences in performance gains are probably down to you having 3 bar or 4 bar installed. Revo's website doesn't really mention 4 bar too much. As to whether it's detectable. Hmm, I would guess that if you're looking hard enough you'll find it. A quick test drive by the mechanic then certainly not, your ECU sent off to Skoda Towers then I would guess so.

Adams,

As already touched on by Rob and Q, the insurance vultures have to know unfortunately. Yes they are in insurance and yes they are vultures but if you don't tell them then you're not insured. Simple as that. And we all know what we think of uninsured drivers don't we?

Thanks for the respone guys, think I will leave alone for now. It's just that I am used to my TVR at weekends so the Skoda seems a bit flat compared to that, altough a lot more comfotable :)

OK, have spoke to the dealer and yes it is a Revo so have spoke to them direct. The unit uses hex???? code and as the dealers are not licenced to read the code the unit is undetecatble, even to Skoda H.Q. The only people who could detect it would be other tuners. The basic system costs you

Sorry mate, but whoever told you that is talking ******.

All they needs is an SPS unit to turn the code on / off and prove its there.

Also, if your ECU fails and gets sent to VAG Technical they will almost certainly be able to find it. They're a multi-billion pound manufacturer, they have the technology.

If you don't want possible warranty problems then don't remap it. :)

I also suggest you check out the pricing on www.revotechnik.com

If it's there, it's visible...is he really trying to suggest that a group of third party people can modify a chip yet Skoda themselves don't know how to read it?! They might not be able to tell what the actual code does, but I suspect they'd easily be able to tell that it wasn't standard code.

Besides which, there'd be an invoice somewhere for the work done in chipping it, so if they wanted proof it had been tampered with I suspect this would be enough... :)

The guy say that they fit these to a lot of VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda cars from new, some of the Seat's are done direct from the manufacturer and offer a warranty.....

Hmm...I know in Europe some of the country's manufacturers do offer warrantied modifications. I don't think any of them in this country do though...

Subaru do - they offer the PPP :) It's overpriced and you can get a lot more power for the money, but it's a question of how valuable the warranty is to you ;) Also think BMW/Mini offer a similar package for the Cooper?

Chris

In Addition.

You can choose SPS 1, 2 or 3 at the beginning, or you can stick with the standard Map for

This sounds a bit dodgy....how can anyone not be licensed to read code? You have to be licensed to use code.

To say it's undetectable because someone is not supposed to read it is bordering on the stupid. Also just because the dealers don't have the equipment to see the code doesn't mean they can't send it off to someone who does.

if it's there...errr...it's there. ;)

All my usual disclaimer apply. ;):D

The dual system unit/software re-loads the standard files that were stored in the cars ECU from the factory. Therefore the car is returned to complete standard so no warranty problems.

Definitely not true. They don't even need to read all the code. They all use hexadecimal code -it's just base 16 numbers.

They have a thing called a "checksum". Fellow techies will know what I mean, but, for the uninitiated, it's a unique number generated by the code in the ECU. A particular checksum can only be generated by a particular block of code. Any change of code will generate a different checksum.
