Toshiba laptops

Featured Replies

Bought a Toshiba L300-11v from Currys got it home and thought I would check it before wrapping it for my sons Christmas. Found that the wireless network card was not working, took it back to Currys, had to wait till they found someone in the shop that knew about computers, eventually diagnosed the same as me,that card not listed in devices.Got another of the same model, brought it home, found same problem, took it back, again had to wait on Ross checking it,then he tells me that there is a problem with Toshiba laptops, they have already sent a faulty batch back. Was then offered another of the same model, you can guess my reply.Asked for my money back, but was offered an Acer at £100 extra,to which I said no,was then offered a Compaq that was on display but would need to pay the £50 price difference.Tried to get display model reduced to what I paid for the Toshiba but they wouldn't have it,eventually got my money back.So if you have bought a Toshiba check it now,the shop might not be there after Christmas.

Toshiba laptops have a switch to turn the wireless card off and on, they come supplied in the off position and need to be turned on. Once they are on the card will appear as normal in device manager. On my L100-337 the switch is on the right side.

I suspect the so called "computer expert" knew very little with regards to laptops.

Yes I knew about the switch and so did he,there is a problem with some Toshiba laptops, just thought I would save someone some trouble later on if they did not check things out now.Stupid derogatory comments do not help.

Can't see any stupid derogatory comments

I dismantled my IBM Thinkpad to install a Bluetooth card. There was one in it already  Replaced the card and reassembled computer. Still no Bluetooth and no listing of the card in Devices :(

RTFM, idiot. You have to turn Bluetooth on using one of the function keys :o:O

And I like to think I know something about computers

There was a problem with some HP/Compaq laptops where the wireless would die - down to a faulty motherboard.

In what way is his comment derogatory?

I know this sounds stupid but (apart from the switch being fully on) - Please do check that the drivers have been installed for the wireless card.

Tad late now - I wish you the best with your hunt.

This is a known problem with the L300 series. The software build from the factory has the wrong driver loaded which means an unknown device in Device Manager. The correct driver is on the HDD.

Go to Device manager, right-click the unknown device, select update driver. Point it to c:\toshiba\drivers\wlan

Once it loads the right driver, problem sorted.

I dont think Kenny Rsole cares about actually solving the problem.

But someone else might, in that case, the answer is here.

Yes Kenny rsole is interested, but if you buy a new laptop as a present, you expect it to work staight out the box. Thanks to those who posted help, but this post was really just to warn anyone that had bought one for christmas and put it away without testing that it worked.Problem now solved bought a different Toshiba from John Lewis, and it works fine and is a slightly better spec than the original.
