Dual Mass to Single Mass Flywheel HELP !!!

Featured Replies

Ok Im asking for help again. :P

(Sorry just learning from other people)

Ive had my Torque increased once more on my Furby (Sachs organic clutch) and I'm getting Flywheel judder to just over 2000rpm if I plant my foot.

Ive been told by Kev at Jabbasport that its just the flywheel juddering and its nothing to worry about but... I'm like a women when it comes to worrying :(

Is it possible to just fit a single mass flywheel to combine the organic clutch with it or do I need to buy a new package with the clutch and flywheel together ???

I'm confussed.com lol ! :D

Your options are:

1) Stop flooring it below 2,000rpm in all gears, 2,500rpm in 6th.

2) Fit a new DMF and hope it doesn't go again

3) Fit an SMF, but can make clutch bite harsh apparantly and is noisy.

But you will never have to worry again, Re. Reliability & power issues ;)

Clutch will have to be changed too if fitting a SMF .... Single mass for big power id say...

My Helix + SMF was £830 from mardigras... fit and forget... the bite / feel is ace compared to OEM and who cares if it chatters its only at idle anyways

You will be able to purchase a Single Mass Flywheel on its on from the likes of Jabbasport etc and they will be able to fit it in conjunction with your current uprated clutch, id advise the SMF if your going for Big Power/Torque to, Also the clutch feels a little different but u get used to it ;)

And a Knackered/Semi Knackered Dmf Sounds like your Botttom Ends falling out :D

No Contest ;)

Sorry to thread rob.

When i first got more power i wouldnt plant my foot before 2,500 (usually at 3k) but now im starting to boot lower (more like 2k). Clutch and flywheel etc feel spot on at the moment but no doubt they will go eventually.

What sort of power would you look at introducing a SMF? Helix clutch seems the way to go if you want power... whats the torque rating on the helix in comparision to the sachs? Sachs could take a hybrid... running say 230bhp?

Cheers.

spec stage 3+ clutch - 560 lb/ft rating, AT THE WHEELS

now that is a fit and forget clutch.

IMHO the SMF are a waste of time..... and will only lead to bigger problems later down the line.....

I work for sachs and obviously know alot more about DMF than the normal person, the dmf are there for a reason, and thats to stop vibration and smooth out strong power pulses from the engine. You get rid of the dmf and the vibration goes somewhere else, except now you will end up shagging your gearbox in worst case sinario. Sachs spent thousands of pounds, maybe millions along with vw, audi, seat and skoda in developing these and to then just rip it out and drop a solid mass of steel in there is a problem waiting to happen imho. Of course its entirely up to you if you want to go that route, but i wouldnt advise it personally.........

The power is not an issue for Sachs either.

The DMF will struggle with high (peak or sustained) torque.

If you have a smooth torque delivery curve then it does not have to be a problem at all. The Sachs can easily take 230 bhp, it is when you accelerate that the torque comes into play :)

Just out of interest, what's the difference in price then for a new SMF and DMF, how much are the new then roughly?

The DMF`s used to be £611 + VAT from the dealers for the 6 speed ones

But they have reduced them a bit now

I must admit , we do more SMF`s than we do DMF`s now

.

What he says. I dont floor mine above 2nd gear below 2500 rpm. In 6th I tend not to floor it below 3k.

Hmmmm Not sure what to do now

Right I know Kev told me it's the flywheel thats juddering but can anybody

(with a professional opinion) explain the risk of what that juddering will cause over time if I just leave the DMF in there that is 1.5 years old???

What I think Im going to do is just leave the DMF in there for a while but when Ive got enough cash I will splash out on a SMF.

I know Im a bit behind but Im going for a Shifty & Devonutopia job :D I want the fastest Yellow Fabia in the North lol.

Dont listen to the rubbish get a SMF whacked on there... fitted mines 30k ago and car is bob on... Devonutopia has had his running for Yonks...

My friend has a Hybrid with a Sachs and DMF... was fitted around 5k ago and its all ready vibrating... hmmm

For the clutch if you want a Helix phone Mardi Gras Motorsport  cheapest supplier.. really is an ace bit of kit and if you get anyone on the phone like i did they know everything :D

Don't discount it as rubbish. That doesn't help anyone. Fair enough you have a different opinion, that's fine - but don't discount another point of view just because it's different to yours.

Plus the fact that the poster of the info about the downsides of single-mass flywheels does know what he's talking about.

I just want a SMF to go with my Sachs organic clutch. Is that possible or will I have to fit a new clutch too ???

I only ask cos my clutch is only 9 months old.

Understood but it wasnt really a dig was more of a statement... I have witness both bits of kit and IMO feel wise / performance wise / reliablity + power wise the SMF combo works

Which is why my friend with the Hybrid Fabia is now looking into a SMF combo... It makes sense unless you like replacing DMF's

If my gearbox falls to pieces you may laugh lol

Im sure you cant bud... but Sachs have developed a new clutch im sure that can be used with either a SMF or DMF... this was in the pipeline when i went down the SMF route a year back

Without trying to sound funny here or being offensive......the clutch was fine when i had it...mike had it on his, and brian at star performance's old fabia ran a standard clutch for 20k

From what i gather....again without being offensive but from what i gather eric is booting it off the mark....which ****s it up and flooring it from low revs, because it starting doing it very shortly after he got the car off me and mikes ran fine.....again neither of us did any of those and i really pamperd the mechanic side of things like that.....again no offence headed either way.

littlebull....im afriad to say your definitly not the first person to have had a really fast yellow one

And i know of someone else who isn't on here is going to 250 bhp with a yellow one aswell ;)

Im planning on going down the SMF set up in the new year with a new turbo to follow some time after :D

I spoke to jabba and they do a sachs smf set up and said its rated just as high as the helix and is more traffic friendly so to speak and is a little cheaper than the helix aswell.

Hmm decisions decisions...... lol

Maybe so you can say that about anything... i bought mines at 37k clutch was fine and 2k later it had gone....

Eric has put 7-10k on it since he bought it off you which is plenty of time for a problem to arise.... and he is a more careful driver than me thats for sure

And it is not the clutch as it does not slip its the flywheel that is vibrating which is where my arguement lies

yeah thats just new bud, when i was on the hunt the only option to me was the Helix and i spoke to Jabba who said Sachs were developing one at the time and i could be the 'guinea pig' but it never materialised...

The other option at the time was a Spec clutch which is higher rated than both of them but it needed to be imported from the states and i thought the Helix would suffice
