Dual Mass to Single Mass Flywheel HELP !!!

Featured Replies

You will be able to add a SMF to your Helix Clutch but im sure it will need to be one with the Torsion springs i believe its called, or it may be one without them, if you get in touch with Jabbasport they will be able to tell you exactly which one you need. You might aswel get your Gearbox oil changed whilst your there too. Tis easier whilst everything is already apart haha.

if you want the best fit the spec, tho with the exchange rate they will be super expensive nowbut trust me they are well worth the money,i launch mine in second gear all day long on the strip,oh and while the cluch is out fit a peloqun atb diff, simply a stunning combo.

I have the Helix set up on mine and no complaints so far, that was running 180 odd bhp and about 300lbs torque. Now its 240bhp and 380 torques I just hope it can take it.

Which is why my friend with the Hybrid Fabia is now looking into a SMF combo... It makes sense unless you like replacing DMF's

If my gearbox falls to pieces you may laugh lol

15k on a dmf running 400ft lbs, and 250 bhp, not even the slightest trouble to date ;).

I changed my clutch at 45k and that was like brand new having been mapped for 40k. I put it to you that being unkind to these components kills them, so learning to look after them properly whilst they are in the car means you dont actually need an smf.

Yeah!

Look after the components, but treat the car like a skip!

You philistine.......

I apologise in advance for asking but i have a 1.4tdi 80 (new shape). All this talk above is worrying. Will the lower power and torque still lead to dmf problems if floored below 2k??? I don't want to break it!!!

I think flooring it from below 2k in high gears i.e. 5th and 6th will kill it quicker.

The newer DMF's that are coming out now actually have a 2 stage damper process in them. The older ones in the 1.9tdi's used to have a 1 stage damper system. Basically inside you will find lots of springs, with plastic stops in them, as the DMF operates these springs compress and retract all day long damping out the power pulses produced by the engine. Also inside the DMF they are packed with grease, not quite sure what its called, but its sticky as **** and horrible when we have them back at work to test when they have a hole in them due to the insides being smashed to f*ck.

For anyone interested, this isnt a SACHS DMF but it shows you the internal components and the way they work in operation. May be of some use to some people?

Very interesting reading.

Sachs invested the money developing the dual mass flywheel for VW/Audi

These DMF have cost VW and Audi millions in warranty replacements

Now sachs have produced a SMF to replace the DMF?

Isn't that sort of admitting they got it wrong?

Surely in this case the VAG group would be looking to Sachs to reimburse for all they have replaced under warranty that failed prematurley?

I sold about 200 Volkswagens last year, mainly Passats, and loads of them had been given new flywheels looking through the history prints and recall stickers in the boot

No, that information is quite inaccurate actually. Sachs did indeed invest and make the VAG flywheel, as did LUK, however, on newer PD140/170 engines, the LUK had the faults with them, as they had potentially the possibility to cause fire in extreme cases.Sachs OE and Sachs Aftermarket stuff is all produced on the same production line, nobody knows where it is going to end up, be it OE or Aftermarket. Sachs OE had a 0.01% failure per 1 million dmf's sold, so how come in the aftermarket we see so many back? its not due to the DMF ****ing up, its due to other parts being worn on the engine, gearbox or elsewhere in the transmission.

As for sachs producing SMF, this is also inaccurate information. Ill agree, yes they do do them, and now do kits, but only from SRE ( Sachs Race Engineering) and not SACHS OE or Aftermarket. The SRE stuff is for Race purpose or Fast road stuff.

Now, i do belive that Valeo do a 4 piece replacement for the DMF on the Octavia's mk1, this includes SMF, clutch and brg, and Skoda do offer this as an option i belive at dealers when they go in for a replacement clutch, but 90% of the people that have these are taxies, and the people that drive them are thick as **** who drive in too high a gear at too low an rpm, and this is what screws the DMF.

When people change a dmf on a car that has done 60,70,80k miles, and then they have problems, the inital though that is the problem is the parts they have just replaced, but in actual fact, due to the newer parts having less tolerance than the used parts, it just highlights an existing issue that the worn dmf didnt......

This is my take on your comment anyways. Feel free to tell me im wrong.

Why when ever I ask a question do I start an arguement lol.

lol, no argument matey..... and its a good question to ask, but working within the sachs warranty department, and also seeing dmf's made on the production line in germany, just wanted to make sure everyones mind was clear about why its important to have a dmf, and how or why they break.
