Thinking of buying VagCom whats best for me

Featured Replies

I am gradually ironing out some faults with my Mk 1 Octy and have the following...

00931 - Locking module for central locking: rear right (f223) 54-00 incorrectly equiped

00929 - Locking module for central locking: front driver side (f220) 54-00 incorrectly equiped

Locking module for central locking: left right incorrectly equiped

I am looking into buying something to read fault codes on my car in the future and want to ask what should I go for and would whatever you sugest be usable on other vw/skoda cars (incase in a few years i decided to get either a Mk 2 Octy.

Is the incorectly equiped fault something to do with being to wrong part for the car, as i know the previous keeper did some swapping and changing.

Thanks for the advice.

I am pretty sure the MKII has to use the genuine Ross-Tech cable, the HEX+CAN lead would be (and was) my choice.

They are not cheap, but at least you can be assured that they are future proof (for the foreseeable future at least) so whatever VAG car you buy it will work on.

Or you can buy a cheap fleabay cable now and then get a genuine cable later when the cheap one doesn't work on your new car.

The full Vag-Com activation is built into the Ross-Tech cable itself.

Not sure of the relevance of the above comment (although correct)

It might be worth looking on VAGCAT to make sure the part numbers fitted are the correct ones for your cars year and model.

hmmmm, my cheap cable worked perfectly first time

if your not going to get a MKII for another couple of years why the expense??

The important bit is:

when the cheap one doesn't work on your new car.

Yeah I noticed that after I posted... but I noticed this before I did

I thought that if it fits surley it should work, But will look at the part numbers to see if they match.

The car dosent like 3 of the door locking mechanisms .

Thanks.

out of interest, how much did you pay?

40 notes - (your not the guy that came out are you) :P

lol, no.

I had a fault and got a cheap lead from ebay for £13.99.

I've used it a few times to read the faults and reset the light and I think I have sorted the fault.

Just curious in what it would have cost me lol.

If you can afford Hex+CAN then that is the one to get. If not then in the short term you could use a reliable eBay lead and buy a 99$ licence from Ross Tech.

If you are buying a Hex+CAN then buying in the UK where the $/£ rise hasn't taken effect yet is the best option, buying from an authorised reseller before they have to re-order more stock.

justinbarrow,

There are a lot of threads about Vag-Com and what is suitable for particular cars.

If i was you, going by what you say in your post, i would purchase a 3rd party lead from eBay and use the shareware version of Vag-Com which is Version 409.1 Please note that Ross-Tech, the makers of Vag-Com do say that shareware version 409.1 is NOT compatible with Microsoft Vista. If then you find that you need more from the software you could register the shareware version 409.1 with Ross-Tech for $99 and this will give you the full version of 409.1. Again the full version of 409.1 does NOT contain the same functions as the latest version 8. After that if in a few years time you decide to get a MK2 Octavia you could purchase the genuine version from Ross-Tech and you will receive a discount of $99 because you have already purchased the license.

Mate, you have to think what you really want out of the software. If all you really want to do is read/erase fault codes and do the odd adaption i would go for the 3rd party lead. If you want to do more, and are capable of understanding the graphs and logs that the latest full version can do then go for that.

I have a 3rd party lead, bought from eBay. I downloaded the shareware version and eventually registered it for $99. I however have a Fabia but the lead would work with the MK1 Octavia. I have had no trouble, touch wood, with mine.

I only wish i had read your posts earlier. I was down in Barrow visiting my Bro about two-three weeks ago. I would have brought mine down and scanned it for you. Possibly i will be down that way next week, but its not guaranteed yet.

Just remember whichever way you go, you'll get support from the guys and girls on here, i am sure of that.

Thanks for the pointers and advice, I got the locking switched to single phase mode (or something similar) and touch wood so far it hasnt unlocked during the night or wound the windows down.

Just need to sort the incorectly equipped codes for the locks so will look into the part number issue next week, I cant see there being 3 locks all different though.

Cheers

You can do logs and graphs with the ebay cable too, as long as its registered.

Yeah sorry mate what i meant to say was that the latest version has loads more scope that the shareware version. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ooops yeah, I had this topic open and another one relating to useing ebay cables in another tab, must have posted to the wrong one, feel free to delete mods ;)

Vag-Com do say that shareware version 409.1 is NOT compatible with Microsoft Vista.

Works fine for me on Vista, doesnt recognise the MKII Furby, but i only use it on SWMBO's anyway.

Cheers for that.

Good to know that it might work for some on Vista. Didnt work for me and Ross-Tech states its not compatible.

But just maybe.........

When you install it do so by right clicking and selecting run as administrator also once installed run it in compatibility mode, that might help.

I did all that but worked first time then not after that. Are we saying that Ross-Tech has it wrong and it DOES work under Vista because i usually advise people that it doesn't.

No Ross Tech are not wrong, they didn't write that version of software to support Vista. If you get it working then it's a bonus.

OK, thanks. From now on if anyone ask for advice i will advise that Ross-Tech list it as not being compatible but other users have been able to set it up and get it running under Vista.

Cheers.

What Ross-Tech has really said is that it is not supported under Vista since it was written before Vista. That some have gotten it to work is as VRstu has said, a bonus. Still, RT is not going to support problems for the old versions in Vista.
