One for Jason and the other PD power Guru's

Featured Replies

I'm just after some advice ;)

If someone wanted to take a Roomster, with a PD105 Engine, and try and squeeze a reliable 200BHP out of it (say for example it was already making 160BHP)

What sort of mod's would it need? how strong is the PD105 bottom end?

Hybrid / Injectors / Clutch / Exhaust / Custom map?

I'm posting up in the furbie section because some of you have pushed the PD130 lump to extreme's and not a lot has been done in the land of the Roomster with regard to this sort of thing yet.

Want to see what Jase has to say - but I believe that you're talking an engine/gearbox transplant to do it reliably...

I didn't think there was that much difference in the bottom end of the pd105 / pd130, I must admit though I had forgotten about the gearbox. I will have to look at the torque rating for the 5sp transmission.

Cheers Bas :)

best bit of advice - Unit 18.

Ross is a great person and an amazing mechanic and can advise you how to go about it.

Scrappie PD130 +gearbox + ECU and loom (?) plus a hybrid and FMIC + uprated clutch +remap perhaps a SMF and you'll easily get what you're after, if not a tad more... Stock injectors are good to about 230+bhp depending on your smoke tolerance.....

And derv engines only start to run in properly after many many miles, so not difficult to get a good engine I'd imagine.

Of course after that you're looking at uprated brakes, suspension and insurance costs, so give it a good think.....

After Lummox's vRS Estate I think a vRS Roomster would be another unique project...

Already got the brakes and suspension, and insurance is no real issue at my age :)

I am just testing the waters as the intention was to pass the vRoomster onto my wife when her Panda 100HP is ready for going then I was thinking about heading back into Subaru or scirocco territory. But I like the idea of a more "extreme" roomster, and it's not like I am shy about modding, I am shy about posting over it after having my collar felt by SUK though

i'm fairley sure you are only a fmic, turbo and a re map away from 200 ish bhp

Dunno the specific numbers but Jason ended up doing the full swap. He would know just how far you can reliably push the PD 105 before it breaks, and at the exact precise point at which one would handgrenade itself...:rofl::rofl::rofl:

he had about 200bhpo from the pd100 engine before he swapped it tho:D

Nah - I only had 154bhp from it (you're thinking about JohnYardley and the red one?) - and not the wealth of knowledge I now have else I could have taken it to over 200hp before doing the conversion (in hindsight)

Mr Fluff - You essentially have the same pd100 engine I had so for 200 horsies you only need the following for definite.

1) PD130/PD150 injector units

2) Hybrid vnt17 turbo. EG Allard VT2 or TD Stage 1 (2 if feeling flush ;))

3) A good remap

Sounds too good to be true, right? But that is what is missing from the pd100/105. However, I would also want the following to be in place to help reliability:

1) A damn good clutch

2) FMIC

3) Bigger brakes

4) Very good suspension

5) decatted/free flow exhaust, downpipe to suit hybrid ideally

6) good intake / filter

7) gauges to monitor turbo, temps, etc

A lot of the bit's on the list I already have and are fitted jason, I am missing a turbo / injectors / clutch and a few other bit's.

It's already "breathing", turning and stopping quite well on the current mods.

All said and done then, it's not in the realms of fantasy to get another 40 reliable ponies.

Thanks guys

Nope - and with a TD stage 2 turbo, I believe 200hp would be "conservative" - 220 more like it.

A 220bhp Roomster

That would be quality - just think about the fun you could have in that :D

I am probably being a bit OTT, but you have to factor in the bottom end / head is all still pd105, and I don't know if the tolerances are up to the spec of the pd130. :) Same with gearbox, etc. Guys in the US though have taken pd100 engines to over 200. They can take the power supposedly.

is the gearbox on this setup anything like the 5sp box on Mk4 diesel golfs ?

cos they are weak as fook !

When I had my old Mk V Golf, which had the pd105 engine, remaped, it took it no problem on the standard clutch, much better in fact than when I had my Fabia VRS done.

Personal feeling is that the engine is more than capable of taking the extra and as you suggested Jason all that's required would be injectors, bigger Turbo, clutch and remap

Thanks for the info Jase - good to know.

I hear that WW has a set of OEM injectors floating about......

There was a few posts a long time ago on what is different between the Pd100 and the Pd130/50 and there are quite a few bits on the top end which might need looking at. I have no doubt the chassis and suspension will handle the power better than the Fabia but it's a lot of work.

My tuning box means I can just about stay ahead of a VRS out of the Severn tolls so this would be awesome

Still doesnt get away from the fact you are indeed MAD!

High praise indeed :D

That would get fluff a good way there!

I would get the vRS engine and loom in there if you want reliablity.

2p worth.

HTH. Dave

From what limited techie knowledge I have, the main reason I ended up changing all the looms in my car is because

pd130 wiring harness didn't talk to engine bay harness

engine bay harness didn't talk to internal harness

So I ended up changing the lot.

Had I known that I could probably have used the pd100 injector wiring loom in the pd130 head, and kept all my original 5 speed wiring / dashpod, etc I probably would have done my conversion a little differently. IN theory then, you take pd130 engine, remove pd130 injector wiring loom (kind of easy... ) and plug in pd100 wiring loom which will then mean your engine talks to the original wiring loom which saves ripping out the dash etc. I sure hope this is right though.

Dont think that will work Jason, the wiring looms (engine bay) are different to what you need to do is change the lot over as myself and Alex have done/doing.

I can get a dash out in under an hour no probs, that saves alot of heartache further down the line.

Fair play - It was just one of my silly musings as usual! ;)

Good progress on the flying dutchman! I think it took me an entire saturday to just strip out the interior, and that was with leaving the steering column in too.

I think I may have to swap all the heater box over, from what I can see its different to the vRS one, there are a few wiring connections I dont remember from stripping out the old one.
