Its down to taste, I agree I can get a cheaper car, with more extras and lower insurance if I got a fabia tdi but they just dont appeal to me, and its not the skoda badge either, cos i'm toying between golf tdi and octavia tdi and it'll come down to the golf probably as its smaller

Just to update people, if I buy a VRS I just know i'll turn it into a beast which will defeat the object of selling the scooby, so I'm going for a Mk5 Golf GT TDI, if anyone here knows how the hell you tell the model range apart please let me know. Do GT TDI's say GTI on the back or TDI???

I think it will have "GT TDi" on the back...... but I think the Fabia is a much better car for a lot less

Whats the mid range performance of an Octy VRs like compared to the Fab VRs.......in bog standard ?

Would the Octy leave the Fab in race terms..on paper it should does it ??

I've had both. when i had the octy vrs and test drove a fabia vrs, the fab felt quicker in general driving. i suppose its the extra torque. It wasn't just me either, took it home to let dad have a go,when he came back he also reckoned it was quicker. i know on paper the octy is faster, and ultimatley it must be, but the general driving that i do, the fabs okay.

btw i love both octy and fab :)

Cheers

Jonno.

hehe, I had a late night change of heart when I realised how cheap fabia VRS's were new and that its the same power output as the 2 year old golf TDI I was looking at but with a lot more equipment! Going to see how much I can get a new one for with as uch kit as possible from a dealer (any help there appreciated), or look for a 2nd hand one, notice they're going now for

My gawd he's seen the light !!!?

As you were talking about Scooby costs being the issue it comes down to how much you want to save. I actually went looking for a 100PD Fabia (to remap to 145) when I dumped the Impreza and ended up with the 4x4 Octavia.

To be honest though, if cost IS a key issue the only possible reason for going Golf over the Fabia or Octavia is resale....BUT you spend a fortune more in the first place for a very similar quality car.

Skoda servicing / labour rates are cheaper than VW /Audi as well.

hehe, just been to a few dealers, going to post a new thread in buying advice now as this thread has changed as i've changed my mind, the mods shoulda put it in about 4 different forums by now ;)

One word from who i've spoken to is "availability"

On your resale thing, the idea is to drive the car and make it pay for itself over atleast 5 years and basically keep piling on the miles!!!

I'm officially ending this thread and camping here in future ;0

My experience of roadgoing 4x4 was with a Cavalier 4x4, which replaced a Cavalier SRi. Without a doubt, the 4x4 was the most competent car I've ever owned. It had the same engine and close-ratio box as the SRi so the performance was very similar. I lived in Shetland at the time so wet, twisty roads were common, and when we got snow in the winter it lay for a time.

Even in the dry the 4x4 was better than the SRi. One nice summer evening I covered the 20 miles from Lerwick to my home in the west of the islands in 16 minutes. :D Maybe not that impressive, but Shetland roads are twisty, there are no dual carriageways and there are a lot of single track roads.

I road tested an Octavia VRs at the weekend and am pretty sure I am going to order one. I'd consider a 4x4 but don't want an estate. I'd love a 4x4 VRs hatch. Pity they don't make one

There are some Octavia 4x4 hatches out there.

Yep, definately are, theres one parked in my garage at the moment. They didnt import them for long so youll have to look hard but its worth it if you want one

Marshalls in Ipswich sold a batch of 50 about 18 months ago as an opening offer for their new Skoda dealership so there may be a few secondhand ones around now, if you contact them talk to Simon if hes still there as hes very helpful
