Servicing Advice..... I am going alone :)

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone.

I have tried to search but couldn't find anything. I took my car to Skoda for a quote on a service at 80K. Was quoted £400 so i told them to stick it. Went to a Vag specialist and got quoted £180, but looking into what is done on a 40K/80K service there isn't a lot covered.

So I am more then likely going to do it myself when I am replacing the EGR and boost pipe.

So far I know I need

Oil filter and Oil (sump plug and washer)

Fuel filter

Cabin filter

Have I missed anything? except air filter, I have a pipercross.

I am sure it needs the hydraulic fluids change, such as the power steering and brake fluid. I am going to wait a month or so and have the break fluid done when I have the 312's on. But how simple is it to do the Power steering?

One last thing. How do I drain the coolant so that I can replace that? or do I not need to do that.

If you have not had the cambelt done then that must be done as well. Coolant is designed for the life of the engine and shouldnt need to replacing unless you have lost coolant due to replacing another part (eg. radiator).

The coolant on modern VAG cars does not need to be changed, so that's one less job to worry about

iv had the cam done. It was done at 67.

So i don't need to do that coolant then, Thanks

What about checking and toping up the Gearbox oil level .Reading the codes for any errors,

i always thought coolant should be changed as depending on the type it lasts for a certain amount of time and then gets less effective. i.e. the red coolant is the new type and is used on most cars in the last 10 years (not just VAG)

red coolant i am told by valvoline last 3-4 years. ford also told me the same thing.

i've never heard of a coolant lasting the life of the engine without draining it. You are also like to get blockages(as well as heavy limescale deposits) if you do not drain it and put in new stuff.

just my opinion.

The 40k/80k is the largest service of all.

All the filters are changed, an inspection is carried out and fault codes read etc.

The coolant has additives in in to stop limescale forming, there is no interval for changing G12+ (or G12++)

how do i check the gearbox oil level the?

Thanks for all the info people.

Usually you take the level plug out while the car is on a level surface, and if its not running out of the hole. Then usually it needs to be topped up.

Some gearboxes usually have a fill plug ontop of the boxes, but you can fill through the level plug if need be. Just make sure you use the correct gearbox oil, i made the mistake of using the wrong oil on one of my cars, but i decided to do a full drain and fill with genuine stuff when i'd realised later on in the evening.
