Rusty Hubs - vRS 5 months old!

Featured Replies

Yes, I know I live in a salty air hotspot, but surely my hubs shouldn't all be rusting after 3000 miles? Car's about five months old now, but I noticed this a matter of weeks after taking delivery.

I see from previous threads that at least one of the members got it refurbed under warranty - that's where I'm thinking of heading with mine. Any ideas / suggestions? (Apart from Hammerite it myself - I ain't going down that road on a car which is a matter of months old - that just wouldn't be right!) :(

how odd, bare steel that is exposed to rain, dry, salt and soap then made really hot then cooled hugely overnight rusts. i'd be taking this up with trading standards if i were you

Is this your first ever car? If it is ;) then you may find that most if not all cars develop a rusty appearence on the hubs, no matter what the age.

To ture, mine are exactley the same!

Its not a hub, its a brake disc.

btw thats not the hubs its the discs :)

If your going to rant at someone its best to have the right info first.

Yeah, don't expect I'll bother next time right enough. :thumbdwn:

I'll probably just scuttle off to DW instead. First time I've got such a negative reaction on Briskoda, which is a real pity as all the other postings / posters have been fairly positive on the whole.

To be fair, all cars have rusty hubs/discs. And although it's no fault of yours, some of us get a bit bored of the same questions time after time when the search button 9/10 times will take you to where you want to go.

If they bother you that much, buy some new discs, or paint them would be my advice.

Black or silver hammerite or similar if it bothers you. And it's a shame the OP seems to have taken offense - you can't beat a bit of banter which is all it is

I had mine rubbed down and re-sprayed by the dealer on my first vRS as a 'goodwill gesture'. The next time they wouldn't do it so I did it myself with Hammerite and it never came back.

Worth spending the time doing a proper job with it yourself...

I'll just call it a day on this post then.

No, I didn't want anyone to kiss anbody else's ****, neither did I look for any sarcasm. I'd still be interested to see if anyone went into their dealer and asked for a set of four or two brake discs for an Octavia what they'd actually get? I'd be prepared to bet it wouldn't be the things that are rusting in the picture. I can't say I'm too bothered by this point really. :)

I did mine with Sliver smooth hammerite in Approx April 2008 and still look OK now. I guess its something I may need to do once every 2 years or so.

Get the wheels off, wire wool the rust off, clean off then paint. While leaving the paint to dry, clean and wax the wheels.

Steve

You wont get a new set of discs thats for sure.

You may get the centres painted, this however wouldnt be paid for by Skoda and would be a goodwill gesture as mentioned and paid for by the dealer.

didn't mean to upset you, take a chill pill will you.

love you.

I too used hammerite on mine, the vehicle cancer hasn't come back. Just rub them down a little bit then paint away.

I agree that it's the norm for the disc rotors to rust, and I also agree that it doesn't matter, but it seems odd for an OEM VAG disc to do it?

I thought they came painted with silver paint... None of mine have ever rusted.

They are normally painted silver, but it doesnt last very well. Especially with our roads, aloy wheel cleaner etc etc.

My vRS will be 3 years old in March with 30k miles.

Mine were perfect but started showing symptoms of this early in the summer (it was very slight), I gave them a rub down with wonder wheels when giving the wheels a going over, they were like new after it. Then later in the summer I tried it again but obviously rubbed a bit hard in one spot, which is now starting to rust.

The excessive amount of salt used in the UK must be what accelerates this with you guys.

Mine rusted almost instantly once the vrs left the showroom. A quick coat of Hammerite solves the problem though.
