Octavia Scout 08- What steel wheels

Featured Replies

Hello All

Does anyone know what steel wheels will fit my Scout? i.e Audi VW, Skoda etc. I am looking to get a set of 16" to use with winter tyres and snow chains.

Cheers

Jim

Will the ones off an Octavia Classic not be a direct fit. You could maybe get a set from a dealer who has done an alloy upgrade on a Classic alternatively a local breakers. Mine (DA Autoparts, Dumfries)charges £15 per wheel for steel wheels. They had ones from a new shape octy in stock when I enquired for my Mk1

Thanks Loskie, been hunting high and low amongst dealers and scrap dealers alike, but with not much success, now wondering if I would be better of with some VW beetle 16" alloys, although this could be a bit over budget.:(

I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you can get 16" steels, 15" are deffinately available and more info in this thread re size, offset etc.

Note: I believe the wheel bolts are different for steels and alloys so please check first.

yes you would use 15" wheels but use the next profile up to give the same circumference. Regarding "different nuts" (oo er missus) you use the same nuts when you attach your steel spare when your tyre on the alloy gets a puncture so why not?

It's a point that was raised in that previous thread, all I know is that when I replaced a set of steels for alloys on a Golf MkV there was a definate need to buy a set of alloy wheel bolts. Whether that is a necessity doing the reverse I'm not sure, but they deffinately have a different bevel profile.

For the sake of thirty quid for a full set I wouldn't want to risk it tbh, not if you're intending on driving in harsh winter conditions!

The spare on my L&K is 16" steel despite the fact that the car is fitted with 17" alloys. The bolts will therefore fit both alloy and steel wheels because the bolt seats have exactly the same profile. The diameter and the rolling radius of both the 16" and 17" wheels will be the same because the 17" tyres are a lower profile (45) than the 16" (55). Therefore 16" steel wheels will probably be available to order (at a price!) from a dealer.

Before deciding on 15 or 16 check that your intended tyres are made and available in the suitable size. If you think that you will ever use more of an of road bias tyre then tyres in 15" may be more readily available.

Also, while the wheels are about the same, 15" tires are less expensive, and give better damping (and worse handling when driven hard) in winter roads.

Same for the vRS with 17 or 18" wheels; you get a 16" steel spare. This, I guess, is the one to be bought to be used for 'winter wheels'.

You could alternatively look on ebay for a second-hand set of 16" alloys.

Just so you know Beetle steels are 5x100 and thus wont fit the Octavia II.

mmm.. thought the Octavia II was 5x100, what is it? I note that the inside of my filler cap only gives tyre sizes for 16 and 17" wheels, does this mean that 15" are not recommended on the Scout? Anyone using anything other than the OEM alloy's in a 16" that might be obtained relatively easily second hand (Audi TT?)

5 x 112 pcd for Octavia II. You need offset ET54 to ET45 as well.

I doubt that 15" wheel will fit over the brake discs; so 16" or bigger needed.

I'm using some Audi S-Line 17" wheels on my vRS perfectly well; so 16s ought to be OK; just need the correct PCD and offset.

Happy hunting.

Octy II is 5 *112

This is same as Golf V and Superb I, and some Audi models

Golf IV, Fabia I, Fabia II, Octavia I and Roomster are not the same.

Not sure about Superb II

thanks guys, useful info on PCD and offset, do you mean ET35 to ET 45? Half the fun is in the hunting;)

FYI - there is a set of 16" Octavia Elegance (Lyra) alloys for sale in the right bit of this forum.

Standard 15 steel wheels from a octavia will fit a scout just make sure the rolling radius of the tyre is correct 195 15 65 = -5% 195 15 70 is about the same as the factory fitted scout wheels which are 225 50 17

too early in the morning and I made a mistake with wheel sizes

KayakJim - Do you need the snow chains too? I have a set of RUD chains for 16" wheels which I bought for my Octy Elegance, but I've since swapped the car for a VRS on 18"s.

Thanks, above my current budget, but let me know if they don't sell and I could be interested. I am now thinking about putting M&S rated tyres on my 17" for alp trips in the winter and just not going out if a need chains :D

I drove last February easily up steep snowy hills in the Alps with my Scout with 225/50/R17 winter tires. You will only need chains on your Scout if the road is covered with a layer of ice. Since weather in the Alps is unpredictable during winter times, you really need to have chains. Since it is almost Summer, I am more concerned if I can drive my bicycle up the hill next Alpine vacation in July!

:thumbup:So I think I have grabbed a bargin today on good old ebay 4 x 16" Steels from a 57 plate Seat Altea at the knock down price of £59.99. So the next question is do I need different nuts!:D

Your present wheel nuts will be OK (on the basis that you don't get supplied with different nuts to use with a steel spare when you get alloys as standard).

Good buy by the look of it BTW.
